Baseball Falls to ETSU on Saturday

Terriers reach new single-season record with 500 runs scored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Eight runs were not enough for the Wofford baseball team Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field as the Terriers were bitten by the long ball, falling 15-8 to ETSU. The Terriers drop to 32-16 (9-7 SoCon) with the Buccaneers improving to 32-16 (13-7 SoCon).

With their eight runs in the contest, the Terriers have pushed their season total to 500 runs scored exactly. This is a new program record for a season, marking the first time in program history that Wofford has recorded at least 500 runs. The previous high was 499 runs, which was set last season.

Camden Wicker (2-3) suffered the loss in a starting role for Wofford, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks. Four total Terriers toed the rubber with Mike Eggert topping the team today with three strikeouts.

ETSU starter Jace Hyde (7-3) picked up the win after pitching 7.0 innings with five runs allowed on nine hits.

Marshall Toole paced the Terriers at the dish with his three hits, adding an RBI. The remaining seven hits were dispersed evenly among seven other players. Dixon Black totaled two RBI to top the team with his lone hit being a triple. Lucas Manning recorded the only other extra-base hit for Wofford, a double. He added an RBI. Adam Haber and Jack Renwick both drove in a run alongside their hits, and Brice Martinez added an RBI of his own with a sacrifice fly.

Despite Wofford keeping the hits margin relatively close with ETSU, 10 for the Terriers to 15 of the Bucs, ETSU relied on more extra-base hits. Wofford tallied just two with ETSU notching five, four of which were home runs.

The Bucs struck first in the top of the first with a pair of runs on two RBI singles, grabbing a quick 2-0 lead.

Wofford responded with a run in the bottom of the second. Lucas Manning lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Tyler Hare, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

After a scoreless third, ETSU found a rhythm to plate three in the top of the fourth. The Bucs then added four in the top of the fifth, stretching the margin to 9-1.

But the Terriers kept pushing and hit back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Adam Haber's RBI single kicked things off, and Dixon Black would later drive in two with his triple into the left field corner. Brice Martinez brought Black home with a sacrifice fly, cutting the margin to 9-5.

But the Bucs then used the long ball to pull away. A two-run homer in the eighth was coupled with a grand slam in the ninth to make the ETSU lead 15-5 entering the bottom of the ninth.

But again, Wofford refused to relent. Three-straight walks began the inning and loaded the bases, and a wild pitch plated Tyler Bak to begin the Wofford comeback attempt. Jack Renwick grounded out, trading an out for a run, and after a pitching change, Marshall Toole singled to right to score Haber. But that would be all the Terriers could get with their rally stifled there and the final score being 15-8 in favor of ETSU.

With the series now even, the teams will square off in a rubber match tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. The contest is Wofford's home finale for the season and serves as Senior Day with the 11 senior Terriers being honored prior to first pitch. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and simulcast locally on The CW 62.
