Asheville, N.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team fell in a narrow 1-0 defeat at UNC Asheville Tuesday night. A heroic effort in the second half by the Terriers' seniors could not edge out a draw against the physical UNC Asheville Bulldogs at Greenwood Field.
The game started out rocky for the Terriers early as the Bulldogs dominated possession and were very physical in the first half, earning eight fouls in the half and 19 fouls in the entire game. The physicality and pressure earned the Bulldogs nine corner kicks in the first half. However, the Wofford defense weathered the storm. Out of the seven shots taken in the half, two were shots on goal which were easily handled by goalkeeper Leo Ledin. At the end of the first half, the Terrier offense could not muster momentum, having only one shot.
In the 50th minute of the second half, the Bulldogs got on the transition and before the defense could get set took a shot that found its way to the upper left corner of the net. Being down 1-0, the Terrier offense picked it up and began pressuring the Bulldog goalkeeper, earning seven corner kicks as well as taking seven shots in the half. The most dangerous opportunity came in the 65th minute when Nic Parker escaped from two Bulldog defenders and took a shot within the penalty box. The ball ricocheted off the keeper's hand and then caromed off the post out of bounds for a corner kick.
In the final 10 minutes, the Terriers gave everything they had, taking two shots and earning three corner kicks in that time. In the 89th minute, Stewart Patnaud sent a ball into the box where Wofford attackers were waiting. Only the quick action of the UNC Asheville goalkeeper finally halted the Terrier onslaught, sealing the 1-0 defeat for the Terriers.
Wofford plays its first home game at Synder Field against Winthrop on Saturday, September 14, at 1:00 pm.
