Spartanburg, S.C- The Wofford men's soccer team won in its first home match of the 2024 season against Winthrop 1-0 on Saturday, September 14th at Synder Field. The Terriers improved to 3-1-1 thanks to a goal by Kameron Gorst as Winthrop drops to 1-5-1.
The Terriers started out the match on the attack, taking the initiative early with eight shots in the first half with two of them being shots on goal. In the 19th minute, the ball found the feet of the always dangerous Jakob Andersson on the far side of the box. He curled a cross into the box for the waiting Kameron Gorst, who headed the ball into the back of the net for the goal. This is the first-career goal for the senior from Alpharetta, Georgia, who has been a reliable piece to the Terrier lineup all four years at Wofford.
The always steady Terrier defense turned away the Eagles' offense throughout the remainder of the first half, allowing only three shots in the half and one shot on goal, which was turned away by the diving Leo Ledin. The second half was marked by the continued strength of Wofford's defense, blocking two of the Eagles' four shots in the half, making life easy for goalkeeper Leo Ledin who only made one save in the second half.
The Terriers dominated possession for the remainder of the second half, easily securing the 1-0 win. The game got more physical in the second half with each team having nine fouls in the frame, combing for 18 total in the period. The half was also marked by three yellow cards given out, one to Wofford and two to Winthrop.
"I think any time you lose you must take the emotion out of it and look at it as objectively as we could," said head coach Joel Tyson after the game today. "We flushed the Asheville game and reset our mindset to the game at home. I think our seniors really stepped up and brought our guys up with them to get them to show the moments we needed to show to get a win at home."
Wofford plays its second home game of the year at Synder Field against Georgia State on Tuesday, September 17, at 6:00 pm.
