Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's soccer team fell to Georgia State 2-0 on a rain-soaked Tuesday night at Synder Field. Even with 12 shots taken and eight corner kicks, the Terriers were unable to score before Georgia State's late surge.
The Terriers' offense was humming early in the game, with weather playing a factor throughout the match leading to sloppy conditions and affecting pace of play. However, the Terriers were on the attack early and often in the first half, taking seven shots in the opening frame as well as dominating possession. The most dangerous opportunity in the first half came when Thaddeus Dennis sent a rocket from just outside the penalty box only for the ball to go just wide right. The Panther offense struggled to gain traction as their two shots taken in the first half were blocked by the Wofford defense led by Bryce Peacock and Paul Jones.
The second half saw more of the same from the Wofford attack, possessing the ball and looking for openings. A chance came in the 65th minute from a cross by Jakob Andersson to the waiting Sam Diebold at the back post, catching the Georgia State goalkeeper off-guard. Diebold waited for the ball to bounce which allowed enough time for the Panther defense to swarm and safely clear the ball out of harm's way.
In the 73rd minute, the Georgia State offense found itself on the counterattack and before the Wofford defense could get set the ball was headed to the upper right corner. Leo Ledin could only watch as the ball went to the back of the net for a goal giving Georgia State the 1-0 lead which they would quickly add on too in the 84th minute. The score stood at 2-0 with five minutes left.
The Terrier defense held the Panthers to only five total shots and no corner kicks in the entire game. The game was physical with each team receiving 11 fouls. The Terriers also picked up four yellow cards in the match. The Terriers look to bounce back on Tuesday, September 24, at Snyder Field against USC Upstate.
