Men’s Soccer Wins First Game of the Season Against Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Wofford Men's Soccer team notched their first win of the season against Queens at the Queens Sports Complex Saturday night. The Terriers finished the game with a score of 3-2, despite being outshot seven to 22. The team scored three header goals by Adam Celik, Franklin Spires, and Samuel Byron.

First Half

Wofford started the game off strong by controlling possession and making several deep runs into Queens territory. The team didn't have to wait long for a goal, as junior defender Adam Celik netted a beautiful header in the 13th minute off a corner by Bradley Takamo. However, the Terriers' lead didn't last long as Queens defender Jaiden Anderson scored just seven minutes later. In the 35th minute, senior midfielder Franklin Spire scored another beautiful header off a cross into the box by Mikey Hernandez, to give the Terriers the lead going into half.

Second Half

Wofford started the second half off aggressively yet again, with Henry Boner and Bear Rice playing the ball down the sideline several times early. In the 77th minute, Takamo stole the ball in Royals territory and delivered another ball into the box for his second assist of the game on the third header of the game by sophomore Samuel Byron. Queens midfielder Luis Vera Mayorca scored the Royals' second goal in the 81st minute, but Wofford was ultimately able to hold on for a 3-2 win.

"It's a happy coincidence," said Coach Ryan Osborne when asked about the team only scoring header goals so far this season. "When the cross comes in the box, the timing of our runs and crashing is definitely something we've worked on, but headers per se are probably not [the game plan]."
