SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team secured a win in their home opener against Winthrop at Snyder Field Saturday night. Despite going down 1-0 in the opening minutes of the game, the Terriers finished the game with a score of 2-1, by way of goals from
Adam Celik and
Bear Rice.
First Half
Wofford started off the game slowly and almost immediately let in a goal to Juma Baden in the 3rd minute. They struggled to maintain possession and get anything going offensively until the hydration break midway through the first half. After the hydration break, their pace changed noticeably, and they began to make deep runs and get good chances on the Eagles' side of the field. After several powerful shots from
Bradley Takamo barely missed over the last 15 minutes, the Terriers finally got on the board with their fifth header goal of the season in the 41st minute from
Adam Celik, assisted by
Fabian Menendez.
Second Half
The second half started similarly to the way the first half ended, with heavy Wofford possession and lots of shots.
Declan Mettee and
Bear Rice came into the game as subs and instantly began to create chances, with Mettee driving the ball down the sideline and several shots by Rice in the second half. Finally, in the 83rd minute, Rice was able to put the ball in the back of the net thanks to a beautiful pass through the defense by freshman
Sam Case, giving the Terriers a 2-1 win.
"It's great to come back from 1-0 down," said Coach
Ryan Osborne when asked about overcoming the early deficit. "I think the guys, we were very transparent with them at halftime about what needed to change, and to be fair, they went out in the second half, and they really tried to change a few things and play more on the front foot, so credit to the guys for finding a way to win."
