Radford, Va.- The Wofford men's soccer team fended off Radford in a tight-fought 1-0 match at Cupp Stadium with freshman goalkeeper Leo Ledin making a massive impact throughout the game. The Terriers improve to 2-0-1 with the win Saturday night.
The young netminder was tested early with a shot on goal within the first eight minutes of play, making a difficult save to keep Radford off the scoreboard. This led to the offense picking up the pace early. In the 10th minute, a Wofford corner kick was taken by the always dangerous Jakob Andersson. He found a jumping Magnus Kjoller at the back post to put the Terriers up 1-0.
After the early Terriers goal however, the offense began to stall out not taking another shot throughout the rest of the half. While the Highlanders went on the offensive after the early conceded goal, taking 3 extra shots, two on goal. Which the cool-headed Leo Ledin was able to handle with ease.
The second half was marked with a revitalized Wofford offense, taking three shots within the first 10 minutes. The Terriers took 12 shots total in the second half compared to seven shots taken by the Highlanders in the second frame. Only two of those shots were on goal for the Highlanders, but they challenged the young goalie. The first came in the 55th minute, where Radford had a two-on-one opportunity that the young goalkeeper navigated skillfully. The second opportunity came from a Radford free kick from right outside the box. The free kick was taken with power, and the goalie deflected the ball to safety before it could find the back of the net. The Highlanders showed grit and urgency in the closing minutes of the match, bringing the Wofford defense to its limit, but the Terriers' back line held firm. In the closing seconds, Radford took a shot that just went over the crossbar to end the game.
Wofford will look to continue its unbeaten ways in its final road game of this four-game road trip. The Terriers will play UNC Asheville on Tuesday, September 10, at 6 pm.
