Wofford Men’s Soccer Falls on Road Trip To ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford men's soccer team (5-9-1, 1-3-0 SoCon) fell in their third straight SoCon match-up against the ETSU Buccaneers (2-7-4, 2-2-0 SoCon), 2-4, on Friday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium. This marks the last of three straight away games for the Terriers. The result locks Wofford into the No. 5 seed for the upcoming SoCon Tournament.

The Terriers returned to the field in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The starters included Pepe Hinterschuster in goal, Jakob Andersson, Niklas Hegle, Adam Celik and Mikey Hernandez along the back line. Edvin Langdaahl, Max Talley and Kalle Rahbek made up the midfield. Stewart Patnaud, Samuel Byron and Nathan Simes filled out the forwards.

First Half
Wofford had the first chances of the night, with Simes finding Byron on a slow rolling cross. The freshman fired a powerful shot, forcing the keeper to make a strong save. Two corners followed for the Terriers, but nothing came of the chances. Wofford continued to control the first 15 minutes of the match, having four shots, three corners and most of the possession.

Stewart Patnaud seemed to have a clear goal when after a touch around the goalkeeper, the senior only needed to shoot past the defenders on the line, but the angle was too tight. ETSU went down the field after the miss and put pressure on the Terriers. After a cleared cross, a midfielder found the ball at his feet and rifled a shot to the bottom left corner for the opening goal.

Wofford still seemed to be a more dominant side on the stat sheet, but ETSU continued to find chances on the counter. The Buccaneers won a decisive header in the midfield, leading to a passing sequence that ended with a forward behind the Wofford defense. The attacker finished the ball past Hinterschuster to give ETSU a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute.

In the 42nd minute, Jakob Andersson stepped over a corner as the Terriers looked to get something before the half. Whipping a ball in, Nathan Simes challenged the keeper in the air and won. The ball hit off the right post and seemed to bounce out, but Max Talley was there to tap the ball in.
The teams headed into the break with ETSU ahead, 2-1, but Wofford won the stat sheet for the half. The Terriers had 12 shots, seven on target, compared to five shots, two on target, from the Buccaneers. Wofford also had six corners in the half to ETSU's one.

Second Half
Wofford had early chances in this half as well, with Simes having the first shot on target in the 50th minute. Wofford had multiple shots and corners in the opening 15 minutes of the half but just like the first period, ETSU found the back of the net on a clearance, turned counterattack. Only three minutes later, the same forward used his pace to beat the defense, playing in on a low-driven long ball. One on one with the goalkeeper, the attacker chipped the ball over Hinterschuster to make it 4-1 to ETSU.

From the point of the goal, Wofford controlled more than 60 percent of the ball. The Terriers were determined to find a breakthrough, but the Buccaneers held firm. Declan Mettee managed to add a goal to the tally in the 82nd minute, but it was too late to spark a comeback and the game finished, 2-4.
