Women’s Soccer Fights for a 0-0 Draw Against UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team (3-7-5, 0-3-2) fought for a scoreless draw at Snyder Field on Sunday afternoon against UNC Greensboro (3-8-2, 2-1-2) as conference play hits the halfway point. Both teams will receive one point toward the conference standings with today's draw.

The first half started off with intense pressure and physical presence from the Terriers in the first 15 minutes. The midfield was a key area for both teams as each held possession 27 to 43 percent of the time.

The match didn't see its first shot until 19:32 when the Spartans' Bryanna Parkes saw an opportunity in the Terriers' box but was quickly blocked. UNCG saw a closer chance to give themselves the early lead in the 29th minute, but the Terriers' tight defense held firm to push the ball out of the Spartans' reach.

At the end of the half, Wofford saw their first shot attempt in the 41st minute by freshman Julia Grier off the Terriers' corner kick, but her shot was just wide of the net.

The Terriers ended the half with one shot compared to the Spartans' six and one on goal. UNCG saw six corner kicks in this half compared to Wofford's one.

Coming off the halftime break, both teams came out strong, but UNCG was the first to strike with a shot in the 47th minute, but it was saved by goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola.

From there, both teams saw shots, but none were able to connect to the back of the net. The Terriers' offense kept fighting for a chance to put themselves on the board with a shot by Ines Obradovac, but her attempt was just right of the goal. The last ten minutes saw a physical push by the Spartans, but the Terriers made sure to keep fighting to fend off any opportunities UNCG could see.

In the last minute, Wofford's Aly Bernhard was looking for the game-winner and struck the ball to the low left of the net, but it was saved by the Spartans to finish the game with a scoreless draw.

Wofford completed the game with three shots, one on goal, compared to UNCG's 15 shots, five of which were on goal. The Terriers saw just one corner kick, while the Spartans ended with 10. Navola had five saves, compared to UNCG Emma Malone's one.

Notes:
Aly Bernhard made her first career start in today's match.

This is the second time the Terriers were held to just one corner kick in a match, the first being against Samford on September 26.

The Terriers will be back on the road Friday, October 10 against Western Carolina at 7 p.m.
