SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team (5-6-1) fell short against the (RV) Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (10-1-1), losing 1-2 on Tuesday night at Snyder Field. This marks the third of four straight home games for the Terriers.
The Terriers returned to the field in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Nick Dyer was replaced by
Gavin Lewis for the only change to the lineup. The starters included
Pepe Hinterschuster in goal,
Jakob Andersson,
Gavin Lewis,
Adam Celik and
Mikey Hernandez along the back line. Edvin Langdaahl,
Max Talley and
Kalle Rahbek make up the midfield.
Stewart Patnaud,
Samuel Byron and
Nathan Simes fill out the forwards.
First Half
From the start of the game, it was clear why Gardner-Webb is ranked nationally in multiple offensive categories. The Runnin' Bulldogs were quick on the counter, using the pace of their wingers to create threats behind the back line. Wofford focused on keeping a solid defensive shape to counteract this. GWU averaged 16 shots per game coming into the match and had four shots in the first 15 minutes of play.
The game settled down over the next few minutes, and Wofford started to retain possession more. Gardner-Webb was still dominant, but the Terriers began to find a footing.
Nathan Simes was able to fire off Wofford's first shot of the night in the 30
th minute.
With 10 seconds left in the half, the Runnin' Bulldogs found the back of the net after a short clearance fell at the feet of the GWU forward.
Second Half
The Terriers found the first shot of the half at the 48
th minute. A shot from distance from
Stewart Patnaud was easily scooped up by the opposing goalkeeper. GWU only had two shots in the first 15 minutes, halving their offensive output from the first half.
Samuel Byron found himself near the mid field line at the 63
rd minute. He lofted a ball over the top of the defense to the opposite wing, finding
Nathan Simes, who flicked a ball to the back post.
Declan Mettee was there, making a perfectly timed run, to score the equalizer. Gardner-Webb responded four minutes later as an attacker found space near the penalty spot to fire a volley off into the bottom left corner.
Wofford ramped up their offense with new faces on the field. The reenergized Terriers were able to create multiple chances in the final third, but were unable to capitalize on them. The final chance of the game came with 15 seconds left. Hinterschuster came up for a throw in to have an extra body, but came to naught.
