LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Wofford men's basketball team staved off a late comeback from the Bellarmine Knights on Saturday afternoon, 94-86, in Knights Hall in front of 829 fans.
The Terriers (2-2) were led by 28 points from
Nils Machowski and 24 points from
Kahmare Holmes.
Cayden Vasko was one assist away from a double-double. Holmes and
Luke Flynn had six rebounds each.
How It Happened
It took the Terriers just under two minutes to grab their first bucket of the night by way of a
Luke Flynn layup. Not even two minutes later, Flynn's open three make would give Wofford their first lead of the game, 8-7. The sophomore was hot early, grabbing eight points six minutes into play. He was not the only Terrier that got hot early as
Nils Machowski landed threes in back-to-back possessions, helping Wofford to a 20-16 lead at the 12-minute media timeout.
After not connecting a three-pointer at Auburn,
Cayden Vasko hit two from behind the arc in a row. Despite this, Bellarmine had the slight advantage between timeouts, 10-8. Six of those points came from the line. Vasko kept pushing, draining a step-back three right out of the stoppage. This sparked a 10-2 run for Wofford with threes from three different Terriers.
Wofford just kept hitting their shots as
Kahmare Holmes drained back-to-back threes, pushing the lead over 10 points for the first time in the game. Holmes would score all of his twelve points of the first half in last four minutes. Going into the halftime break with a 51-38 lead, Wofford was shooting 62.5 percent from the field and 75 percent from behind the arc.
The heat kept coming after the break as Holmes grabbed the first points of the half. The Terriers would not miss an attempt until 3:30 minutes into the half. After a 7-0 run for the Knights,
Rex Stirling kept getting open in the paint, finding six of the next nine points for Wofford.
Wofford went on a dry spell from the field, only scoring free throws, for over seven minutes. In that time, Bellarmine scored 22 points to the Terrier's five, cutting the lead to three. A driving layup from Holmes ended the streak and pushed him over 20 points on the day.
With under four minutes left in the game, Wofford held an 80-72 lead over the Knights. Bellarmine scored five free throws, while Holmes and Flynn found buckets to keep the lead at five. The Knights used their final timeout with 1:21 on the clock, hoping to spark a final surge, but it would not come as the Terriers held their lead at five or more for the rest of the game. The final whistle blew 94-86.
