MORGANTON, W.Va. – The Wofford College rifle team competed on Saturday and Sunday at the WVU Fall Classic, hosted by the defending national champion West Virginia University. The Mountaineers, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation, welcomed No. 12 Kentucky, No. 16 Morehead State, No. 18 North Georgia, Wofford, and Mount Aloysius.
The match featured a pair of relays each day amongst the six teams. Saturday's action began in smallbore, and Sunday concluded the WVU Fall Classic in air rifle.
In smallbore, the Terriers were led by
Oliver Guthrie with a 568, followed by
Henry Sparra at 559.
Garett Dall had a 558, while
Anna Mottern and Sam Nickless each had a 551. Dall and Sparra each had 20 centers.
On Sunday in air rifle,
Oliver Guthrie again led the team with a 579. Sam Nickless had a 577, while
Garett Dall had a career-high of 576.
Anna Mottern had a 565,
Henry Sparra a 573, and
Maeghan Springer had a career-best 559. Guthrie had a team-best 32 centers, followed by Nickless with 31.
Overall, West Virginia's Griffin Lake had an aggregate of 1192 to win the match. Lake also had the top smallbore score at 594, with Sofia Ceccarello (Kentucky) having the top air rifle score at 598. West Virginia won the team competition with a 4742, followed by Kentucky (4715), Morehead State (4673), North Georgia (4611), Wofford (4541), and Mount Aloysius (4536).
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, November 22 at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State.
