Wofford Men’s Basketball Tops Erskine

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team improved to 3-0 at home after taking down the Erskine Flying Fleet on Friday night, 81-57, in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

The Terriers (4-2) were led by Jayden Tyler's 13 points, with three other Terriers making it to double-digits. Brian Sumpter had nine rebounds, followed shortly by Rex Stirling's eight. Maximo Ortega dished out a team-high four assists.

"We got a lot of good minutes, a lot of good learning experiences," said head coach Kevin Giltner. "I think they did well. Overall, I am very pleased."

How It Happened
Rex Stirling grabbed the first bucket of the night for the Terriers. Wofford quickly started to show their mettle, scoring 20 straight points before the Flying Fleet could grab more points. Despite a few scores from Erskine, the Terriers pushed forward, scoring 10 more points before the under-eight media timeout. Wofford looked to rotate players, with many starters seeing reduced minutes. This allowed some other players to shine. This was especially the case for Jayden Tyler. He led the team in scoring early, with seven points, including 2-2 from three.

Aside from scoring, the real difference between the teams was rebounding. Heading into the final four minutes of the half, Wofford quadrupled Erskine's rebounds, 16-4. This helped the Terriers gain seven second-chance points and 14 points in the paint. While Tyler continued to shine, dishing out two assists before the half, Callum Richard found six points off the bench. Two of his makes were strong dunks, thanks to his height dominance over the Flying Fleet in the paint. Wofford headed into the half with a 42-21 lead.

Stirling opened the scoring for the half, going 1-2 from the line. Flynn followed up shortly after with a corner three. Erskine was able to go back and forth in scoring with the Terriers for eight baskets before Tyler could drain a three-pointer, making him the first Terrier to reach 10 points on the night. The Flying Fleet continued to fight back, surpassing their first-half points by the under-eight media timeout. They were shooting 52 percent from the field, compared to 33 percent in the first half.

Erskine came out of the stoppage with a 7-3 run. Scoring stalled out in the game for close to two minutes before the under-four media timeout. Wofford snapped the drought, getting four straight buckets. As the clock entered the last minute, Davis Miller drained his first college shot from behind the arc after two years as a manager for the Terriers. The final whistle blew with an 81-57 final score.
