SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell 58-52 in a defensive affair to the Georgia Southern Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers fall to 2-5 while Georgia Southern improves to 4-3.
Wofford closed the afternoon shooting 21-of-61 (34.4%) from the field while knocking down four threes on 23 attempts. The Terriers were 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Georgia Southern shot 20-of-51 (39.2%) from the field and made three deep balls on 20 attempts. From the free throw line, the Eagles were 15-of-20.
Wofford gained the edge on the glass, outrebounding Georgia Southern 38-33, including 11 offensive boards. The Terriers had a slight advantage in the paint, scoring 30 points compared to 28 for the Eagles. Wofford closed the game with 14 turnovers while Georgia Southern had 11.
Queen Ikhiuwu tied her career high of 18 points to pace the team, while
Molly Masingale followed behind with 11 points. Ikhiuwu also grabbed a team-high nine boards, and
Gabby Mundy had seven. Masingale led the group with three assists and two blocks.
Georgia Southern got on the board first to start the game thanks to a pair of free throws. Wofford would respond a couple of possessions later with a
Queen Ikhiuwu layup – her first of two buckets in the stanza. The defense tightened up in the last five minutes of action, as both teams could not find a basket for over four minutes of action. Georgia Southern made a layup on the final possession to end the drought, taking an 8-6 lead at the close of the first quarter.
Molly Masingale nailed a three to get the scoring started in the second quarter and give Wofford a 9-8 lead. A few possessions later Wofford would take a 13-11 lead, but Georgia Southern went on an 8-1 run to regain the advantage. A pair of pull-up jumpers from both Masingale and
Toni Warren cut the deficit to three, 21-18, heading into the half.
The first half was a defensive battle, as both teams shot under 30 percent in the half. The Terriers closed the half shooting 8-of-31 (25.8%) while Georgia Southern shot 6-of-22 (27.3%). The two teams combined to make two threes on 20 attempts in the opening half.
Queen Ikhiuwu was a spark, however, scoring eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Maddie Heiss cut the Georgia Southern lead to two with a quick three-pointer to start the second half, but the Eagles followed that up with four-straight to answer. Back-to-back buckets from
Gabby Mundy and
Toni Warren once again cut the lead to two. Georgia Southern would go on a 9-2 run to end the quarter and take a 41-31 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Terriers scored five-straight to open the final frame, with contributions from
Maddie Heiss and
Queen Ikhiuwu. Wofford would trail 45-41 with 6:02 remaining in the contest until Georgia Southern scored five unanswered to bring the lead back to double-digits. The Terriers were able to cut it to three points with under a minute left but could not complete the comeback, falling 58-52.
Wofford will take a short trip to Gardner-Webb on Thursday, December 4, before returning home to take on to take on Charleston Southern on Saturday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's matchup with Charleston Southern will serve as game one of a doubleheader, with the men taking on Elon at 4:00 p.m.
