Slow Second Half Leads to First Loss for Women’s Basketball

High Point, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team led 39-35 heading into the half, but the High Point Panthers stormed back to give Wofford its first loss of the season, 81-73. The Terriers fall to 1-1 while High Point improves to 2-0.

Wofford shot 46 percent (29-63) from the field and only made five of its 21 attempts from deep. From the line the Terriers were efficient, making 10 of their 13 attempts (76.9%). High Point finished the day shooting 38.9 percent (28-72) and knocked down six of its 26 three-point attempts. The Panthers made it count at the charity stripe, knocking in 19-of-22 attempts.

Four Terriers reached double-digits in the loss, with freshman Gabby Mundy pacing the team at 15 points. Molly Masingale followed behind with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the third double-double of her career. Maddie Heiss and Queen Ikhiuwu rounded out the four double-digit scorers with 12 each.

Wofford outrebounded High Point 43 to 35, including 13 offensive rebounds. It was neck-and-neck in the paint between the teams, as Wofford finished with 40 paint points compared to 42 by High Point. Masingale led the efforts on the glass with her 11 boards. Ikhiuwu trailed right behind with eight rebounds, and Maddie Heiss grabbed six

Wofford lost the turnover battle, committing 18 turnovers while High Point had just six. Molly Masingale tallied the lone steal for the team. The Panthers scored 21 points off those 18 turnovers. The Terriers would finish with six points from the six High Point turnovers.

Gabby Mundy kicked things off for the Terriers, burying a pull-up three to start the game. High Point responded, but Queen Ikhiuwu and Mundy would answer with back-to-back buckets. A 9-0 run that tailed off with a Courtney Swider three gave Wofford a comfortable 18-10 advantage. A layup by Maddie Heiss would allow Wofford to enter the second quarter up 25-10.

The Terriers would go up by as many as 13 points after a Molly Masingale score, but High Point began to chip away at the lead from there. Six-straight points from the Panthers cut the deficit to seven. Those six points were just the start of a 15-3 run by High Point, as Wofford only led 36-35 after the skid. A free throw from Masingale along with a layup from Gabby Mundy would give the team a 39-35 advantage heading into half.

Masingale got the team started in the final half with a pair of free throws, but High Point would roll off 15 unanswered points for the team's first lead of the game. Back-to-back scores from Queen Ikhiuwu ended the drought. Molly Masingale would knock down a three and shorten the High Point lead to five points heading into the fourth stanza.

A three-pointer from High Point began the fourth as Wofford struggled to get the deficit within striking distance. An 8-2 run with 2:32 remaining in the contest gave the team a chance, but The Panthers nailed a deep ball to extend the advantage. Despite the team's best efforts late, High Point would win 81-73.
