GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team (6-11-1, 1-4-0 SoCon) concludes the inaugural season under head coach
Ryan Osborne after falling to No. 1 seed Furman, 2-4, on Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers returned to the field in their signature 4-2-3-1 formation.
Declan Mettee is the lone change from the ETSU matchup on Friday. The starters included
Pepe Hinterschuster in goal,
Jakob Andersson,
Nick Dyer,
Adam Celik and
Mikey Hernandez along the back line. Edvin Langdaahl,
Max Talley and
Kalle Rahbek made up the midfield.
Samuel Byron,
Sam Diebold and
Declan Mettee filled out the forwards.
First Half
The first ten minutes saw the teams split possession while they fought to get settled into the match. Both teams had a corner, and Furman had an off target shot, otherwise, they looked to establish their own play styles onto the game. Wofford had a more direct approach while the Paladins liked to hold the ball for long stretches of time with short bursts of intense offense.
Furman received a penalty in the 13
th minute after
Adam Celik brought down a Paladin attacker in the box during one of their offensive bursts. Diego Hernandez stepped up to take the penalty, sending Hinterschuster the wrong way for an early lead.
For most of the half, the teams went back to trading possession, with Furman holding a slight edge over Wofford. With 15 minutes left in the half, a burst of offense forced Hinterschuster to pull out a double-save sequence to keep things within one score.
Just before the five-minute mark, Furman found another breakthrough. After building out from the back, the Paladins found their way into Wofford's defensive third. The winger was able to push the ball inside on their strong foot to serve a ball into the box. The forward was able to reach it before a Terrier could intercept, finding a pocket of space to finish. Furman headed into the locker rooms with a two-goal cushion.
Second Half
The first ten minutes of the half saw the teams push for an opening and the Paladins found theirs first from a Wofford error.
Nick Dyer missed the ball in the box and tripped up the Furman forward in the 55
th minute. After a short video review, the call was confirmed, and the Paladins converted their second penalty on the day. 57 seconds later,
Samuel Byron found the end of a long ball from
Sam Diebold to grab a goal back for the Terriers. The gates stayed open as Furman found the back of the net again three minutes later. In the second phase of a corner, the Paladins were able to get the ball to the feet of an attacker who quickly turned and fired off a shot that caught Hinterschuster off guard.
Wofford went on to move more bodies up the field to press for a second goal. While the Terriers held more possession over this time, it left them susceptible to a Paladin counter. Furman found four shots while Wofford could not get any shots off in the 20 minutes following the goal. With the game seemingly secured for the Paladins, they made six personnel changes, including a goalkeeper change, in the 82
nd minute during a Wofford freekick. Diebold served a ball into the box after the substitutions. After a bounce,
Adam Celik connected with his head to grab a goal back for the Terriers. It was too late for a comeback as the clock ticked down with few chances coming in the final minutes. The final whistle blew, 2-4.
