SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team closed out non-conference play with a win over the Union Commonwealth Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon, 88-54, in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The Terriers (8-5) were led by
Jayden Tyler's 24 points.
Chace Watley had five rebounds, while
Cayden Vasko had five assists.
Kahmare Holmes had six assists, tying the career-high he set against Elon.
"It was good to see everyone get in the game and get quality minutes because [SoCon] is here," said head coach
Kevin Giltner. "We did not approach this game as a warm-up game, but now it's here, and these things matter just a little bit more".
How It Happened
Luke Flynn opened up scoring in the game with a three-pointer within the first 20 seconds of the game. Both teams scored on four straight possessions to open the game. Scoring stalled for two minutes, but it picked up after two
Kahmare Holmes buckets just before the first media timeout. Momentum did not slow after the break, with Wofford grabbing a 10-3 run, including four different scorers.
Wofford held the Bulldogs from scoring for four minutes, amassing a 13-point lead before Union could grab its next bucket. The roles reversed for a short period, as Union found itself with a 7-3 run, holding the Terriers from scoring for four minutes.
Jayden Tyler would be the one to open things back up for Wofford from the free-throw line. With three minutes left to play in the half, the Terriers went on a 13-4 run, thanks to six different Terriers. At the break, Wofford held a 43-22 advantage.
Brian Sumpter found a stride early in the second half, finding three points and a rebound in the first two minutes. The game slowed down across both teams for two minutes before
Cayden Vasko sparked the offense back to life with an assist to
Nils Machowski's three and a make of his own. The Bulldogs grabbed five points, but
Jayden Tyler cancelled them out with seven points in a row.
Tyler continued to score for the Terriers, reaching a new career-high of 14 after a set of free throws. Another dry period occurred, with only 10 points scored in six minutes.
Luke Flynn started things back up for the Terriers, converting two of three free throws. The freshman took over the scoring with
Maximo Ortega making a three,
Chace Watley finishing a layup, and Tyler grabbing a free throw and a three-pointer. After a media timeout, the youth did not stop their momentum, with Tyler and Watley combining for 10 points. Shortly after, Watley assisted Ortega's second three of the night. The game clock ran down after Union missed its last attempt, giving the Terriers the win, 88-54.
