Women’s Basketball Falls to Georgia Tech Despite Strong Fourth Quarter

ATLANTA – The Wofford women's basketball team cut it to 10 points with just under four minutes of action left in the contest but could not complete the comeback against Georgia Tech, losing 79-63 at McCamish Pavillion on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers fall to 5-8 while Georgia Tech improves to 5-9.

Wofford shot 21-of-68 (30.9%) from the field and made a season-high 11 three-pointers. That is the first time the team has made 10 or more triples in a game all season. The Terriers made 10-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe, including a perfect 2-of-2 from Maddie Heiss. That is now 32-straight makes from the free throw line for Heiss.

Three Terriers finished in double-digits, with Gabby Mundy posting a team-high 16 points. Maddie Heiss followed behind with 15 points, and Molly Masingale added 13. Toni Warren grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Mundy dished out seven assists and had three steals.

Georgia Tech started the game on a 7-0 run, but Mia Flor ended the drought with her third three-pointer of the season. Toni Warren added a pull-up jumper the next play down, along with a Gabby Mundy three to cut the deficit to 11-8 with 5:55 to play in the first quarter. Mia Flor's second deep ball of the game kept Wofford within four points a few possessions later, but Georgia Tech would roll off an 11-2 run to get the lead to double-digits. The Terriers would end the first stanza trailing 28-16.

Wofford opened the second quarter with back-to-back scores led by Maddie Heiss and Gabby Mundy. With the Terriers only trailing by eight points, 28-20, Wofford would enter a dry spell. The team went without a field goal for a little over five minutes of gametime. It was 14 unanswered points from the Yellow Jackets in that time, leading to a 42-20 Wofford deficit. A three-pointer from Maddie Heiss ended the drought, but Wofford would trail 48-27 at halftime.

Molly Masingale scored the first basket for either team to start the third quarter. Georgia Tech answered the next possession, but a Maddie Heiss triple brought the game to 17 points, 50-33. The teams would trade baskets over the next several minutes. Another three-pointer by Maddie Heiss before the buzzer led the team to a 59-40 deficit heading into the final frame.

Gabby Mundy scored nine of the first 14 points for Wofford to start the fourth quarter. Maddie Heiss added a layup along with a three-pointer from Toni Warren. The Terriers began the quarter on a 10-3 run. Nine unanswered points a few minutes later allowed Wofford to bring it within 10 points. Six-straight from Georgia Tech kept the game out of reach, as the Terriers fell 79-63.

The Terriers will have one last tune up before Southern Conference action on New Year's Day against Southern Wesleyan University. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+. SoCon play begins with a road trip to Chattanooga on January 8.
