SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With the game tied at 10 after four quarters, the Wofford women's lacrosse team scored in overtime to defeat Campbell 11-10 on Wednesday night at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Terriers had a 6-5 lead at halftime but found themselves down 10-8 late in the fourth quarter. Wofford rallied to score two goals in the final two minutes to tie the game and scored in overtime for the victory.
Wofford was led by
Bria Foley with three goals, including the game-winner.
Emma Stalteri added three goals, while
Carlie Cutinella scored two goals. Emma Bartlett and
Vivian Chiomento each had goals as well. Chiomento led the team with seven draw controls, with Cutinella having five draw controls as the Terriers had a 13-12 advantage in the category.
Olivia Graebner caused five turnovers to lead the team and had three ground balls.
Barrett Rowe and
Brooke Meltcher each had four ground balls.
Ella Smithers earned the win in goal with 12 saves. The teams combined for 56 shots in the game, with the Terriers holding a 29-27 advantage. There were also five ties in the game, as neither team led by more than three goals in the contest.
"I am happy and proud of the way the team played tonight," said head coach
Jessie Aguglia. "It is always tough to get wins on the road and we look forward to being back home on Monday for our next game."
The Camels took a 3-0 lead after the first five minutes of the game. Wofford answered and had free position goals from
Ella Bartlett and
Vivian Chiomento to cut the lead to 3-2 at the 6:31 mark. In the final 90 seconds of the first quarter,
Carlie Cutinella scored twice as Wofford took a 4-2 lead.
Bria Foley scored three minutes into the second quarter as the Terriers extended the lead to 5-3. A free position goal and another goal with 3:21 left in the half tied the contest at 5-5.
Emma Stalteri found the back of the net with 1:24 remaining to take a 6-5 lead at the break.
Neither team was able to score in the first six minutes of the second half until
Laura Montagna scored with 8:48 on the clock to give Wofford a 7-5 advantage. The Camels scored the next two goals for a 7-7 tie with 4:55 left in the third quarter. A free position goal by
Emma Stalteri made it an 8-7 lead for Wofford at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Camels scored three straight goals to take a 10-8 lead with 2:28 remaining.
Bria Foley made it a one-goal game with 1:18 left in the game. Wofford won the draw control and had a shot saved before the Camels were called for a green card. With the advantage,
Emma Stalteri scored with 17 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The Camels won the draw control to open overtime, but after a timeout turned the ball over.
Bria Foley ended the game with a goal with 3:21 on the clock to give the Terriers their first win of the season. Wofford's last overtime win was on April 5, 2023, against Longwood (18-17).
Campbell is now 1-3 on the season. They were led by Rasa Welsh with three goals and four assists for seven points.
Wofford (1-3) will be back home on Monday, March 3, when the Terriers host Youngstown State at 4:00 p.m. at Gibbs Stadium.
