SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Thursday afternoon, the Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated by the College of Charleston by a 5-2 score at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers won the doubles point, but the Cougars won five of the six singles matches.
The Terriers #1 doubles team of
Robbie Young and
Jack Deveney took an early 4-1 lead and then broke serve to win 6-2. At #2 and #3 doubles, both matches were tied at 2-2. The #2 team of
Hugo Rask and
Ian Rasheed went on for a 6-4 win that secured the doubles point.
Daniel Clivio and
Jack Burdell were ahead 5-4 at the #3 position, but it was unfinished.
In singles, the Cougars took the first set in five of the six matches. They won the matches at #4, #6, and #5 singles in straight sets to take a 3-1 overall lead. At the #2 position, a 6-4, 6-4 win by the Cougars clinched the match. Playing at #3 singles,
Daniel Clivio won the first set 6-3 and dropped the second set 5-7. The third set was tied at 2-2 when his opponent retired, giving the Terriers the point. At #1 singles,
Robbie Young lost the first set 3-6 before winning the second set 6-4. In the third set tiebreaker, the Cougars won 10-6 to win the match.
Wofford (4-4) will be back in action on Sunday when the Terriers host South Carolina State at 1:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center. The College of Charleston is now 4-3 on the season.
