SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 6-1 by South Carolina State University at the Reeves Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs earned the doubles point and then won five of the six singles matches to earn the win.
The Bulldogs had a 3-2 lead in all three doubles matches. They claimed a 6-3 win at the #1 position and a 6-4 win at the #2 position to claim the doubles point. The #3 pairing of
Daniel Clivio and
Jack Burdell was up 5-3 when the point was clinched.
During singles play, the Bulldogs won the first set in four of the six matches. They claimed wins at the #2 position and the #6 position in straight sets. With wins at the #5 and #3 singles positions, the Bulldogs were able to secure the overall match win.
The two remaining matches were decided in three sets. At #4 singles,
Ian Rasheed won the first set 6-2 and lost the second set 1-6. He took the third set 6-2 for the win.
Robbie Young trailed early in the first set at the #1 singles position before tying the set at 6-6. He won the tiebreaker 8-6. The second set was tied at 3-3, 5-5, and 6-6. In the second set tiebreaker the Bulldogs won 7-5, and then they won the third set by a 10-4 tiebreaker to win the match.
Wofford (4-5) will visit UNC Asheville on Thursday, March 6, for a 1:00 p.m. match. South Carolina State is now 4-3 on the season.
