SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 6-1 by East Tennessee State University at the Reeves Tennis Center on a beautiful Thursday afternoon. The Buccaneers earned the doubles point and won five singles matches to claim the league win.
In doubles, the Bucs had a 6-1 at the #3 position. Wofford answered with a 6-2 win at the #1 position by the pairing of
Robbie Young and
Jack Deveney. At #2 doubles,
Hugo Rask and
Ian Rasheed were up 4-3, but the Bucs won the next three games for a 6-4 win that clinched the doubles point.
The Bucs won the first set in four of the six singles matches. They earned straight-set wins at the #3, #5, and #4 positions to secure the overall match for ETSU. The final three matches were decided by third set tiebreakers. At the #4 position,
Jack Deveney won the first set 7-5 and lost the second set 2-6. In the tiebreaker, the Bucs won 10-3 to claim the point.
Robbie Young won the first set 6-2 at the #1 position and lost the second set 5-7. The tiebreaker was tied at 5-5 before Young pulled away for the 10-7 victory. At #6 singles,
Hugo Rask lost the first set 2-6 and rallied to win the second set 6-3, however the Bucs won 10-2 in the tiebreaker.
Wofford (4-7, 0-2) will visit UNC Greensboro on Sunday, March 16. The Bucs, defending SoCon champions, are 7-4 overall and 2-0 in league play.
