Baseball Evens Series with Elon Behind 14-3 Triumph

Terriers plate eight over four-straight innings to best the Phoenix

ELON, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team used eight runs over the final four innings Saturday afternoon at Latham Park to best the Elon Phoenix on the road in a 14-3 eight-inning win. The Terriers trailed 3-0 after the first, but a five-run second frame flipped the margin for good before a later offensive outburst put the contest away. The Terriers improve to 13-6 as the Phoenix fall to 8-10.

Wofford used just two pitchers in the game. Cullen Condon started and pitched the first 4.0 frames, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks with a pair of punchouts. Champ Davis (4-0) polished off the last 4.0 innings to secure the win. He struck out five batters and allowed no runs or hits. The only two blemishes to his line were a walk and a hit batter as he retired 12 of the 14 hitters he faced.

Elon put six differed hurlers on the bump with starter Hank Krift (1-4) suffering the loss. He surrendered six runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk in 2.1 innings of action.

The Terrier bats were operating in full force, depositing 16 hits for a season-high 14 runs. Elon was held to just three base knocks. Every Terrier starter recorded at least one hit with six notching multiple. Tanner Hardin led the way with three knocks, a career high for the freshman. He drove home a pair of runs. David Wiley, Tyler Hare, James Layman, Luas Grantham, and Niko Brini each tallied a pair of hits. One of Brini's was an inside-the-park home run, the first homer of his career. He notched career bests for hits, runs (two), steals (three), and RBI (three).

Both of Hare's hits were doubles and he drove home a pair of RBI. Wiley and Haber also recorded two RBI with Grantham adding one. Wiley, Layman, and Grantham each had a double alongside Hare. The Terriers tied their season high for stolen bases with nine in the game, led by Brini's three. Grantham had a career-best two with Ryan Wynn, Haber, Hare, and Hardin all adding one.

Elon struck first in the bottom of the first, utilizing a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead.

The Terriers struck back in a big way with a five-run second frame. Tyler Hare's walk led the inning off, and James Layman followed with a well-executed bunt single. The catcher's throw to first sailed into the outfield, allowing Layman to rush to third and Hare to scurry home. Lucas Grantham immediately followed with an RBI single. Tanner Hardin's bunt single put two on, and a double steal pushed both runners into scoring position. Adam Haber's chopper single in the infield with a subsequent throwing error allowed both runners to score, and David Wiley's double to the right center gap brought Haber in for a 5-2 advantage.

Wofford tacked on another in the top of the third. With two runners on, Hardin singled back up the middle to push the lead runner across and stretch the lead to 6-2.

Elon got a run back in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly, pulling within 6-3.

In the top of the fifth, Wofford posted two runs to further its lead. Layman led the inning off with a double, but two outs directly followed. Niko Brini stepped up and lifted a ball that dropped down the left field line just fair and rolled into the corner. The speedy Brini raced all the way around the bases and slid home safely with an inside-the-park two-run homer, the first round-tripper of his career. Wofford led 8-3.

An inning later, the Terriers reached double-digits with two more runs. Wiley and Hunter Herndon hit back-to-back singles, and Hare doubled to right to bring home a pair and lift the Wofford advantage to 10-3.

For a third-straight frame, the Terriers collected two runs. An error and hit batsman put two runners on for Haber, who after a double steal pushed one across with a fielder's choice in which everyone was safe. Wiley promptly followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home another, making the margin 12-3.

In the top of the eighth, Wofford pushed across two more runs for a fourth-straight frame. Grantham's double was followed by an RBI single from Hardin. He would then score on Brini's single, pushing Wofford ahead 14-3.

With the series now tied at 1-1, the Terriers return home for the rubber match tomorrow afternoon. The series finale moves to Russell C. King Field with a first pitch time of 3:00 p.m.
