Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Non-Conference Play With Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team defeated Ouachita by a 5-2 score on Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center for the final non-conference match of the season. The Tigers won the double point, but the Terriers answered by winning five of the six singles matches for the win.
 
Ouachita's #1 doubles team, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, won by a 6-2 score. The Tigers secured the point with a 6-4 win at the #3 position. The #2 position was left unfinished, with Hugo Rask and Ian Rasheed trailing 5-4.
 
In singles, the Terriers won the first set in five of the six matches. Jack Burdell had a 6-2, 6-3 win at the #5 position and Daniel Clivio added a 6-3, 6-3 win at the #3 position. Ian Rasheed gave the Terriers a 3-1 lead in the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the #4 position. At #1 singles, Phil Exner, who is ranked #2 in NCAA Division II, had a 6-3, 6-4 win to cut the overall lead to 3-2.
 
Hugo Rask was able to clinch the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the #6 position. The lone match to go three sets was at the #2 position, as Jack Deveney won the first set 7-5 and lost the second set 1-6. In the third set, Deveney had a 4-1 lead, but the Tigers tied it at 5-5 before Deveney closed out the 7-5 win.
 
"Today was a terrific team win against a very good team," said head coach Rod Ray. "All week we talked about the response and the guys certainly responded after losing the doubles point."
                                                                                                
Wofford (5-9, 0-3) will resume Southern Conference play on Saturday, March 29, at The Citadel. The match will begin at 9:30 a.m., which is earlier than previously announced. The Tigers are 8-7 overall.
