SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by East Tennessee State on Friday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Bucs won the doubles point and the two teams split the six singles matches in the close contest.
The Bucs won the first doubles match at the #3 position by a 6-2 score. At #2 doubles,
Grace Agster and
Catherine Blouin were down 0-3 before rallying for a 6-3 win. The deciding match at the #1 position was tied at 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5 before the Bucs won the last two games for a 7-5 win to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Wofford won the first set in four of the six matches. The Bucs took the #1 position by a 6-0, 6-3 score, but the Terriers answered when
Catherine Blouin won 6-3, 6-4 at the #4 position.
Lily Woods had a 6-4, 6-3 win at the #3 position to tie the overall match at 2-2.
At #6 singles,
Chloe Elliott earned a 6-4, 6-2 win to put the Terriers in front by a 3-2 score. The match at #2 singles went three sets, with the Bucs winning the first set 6-2 and
Brianna Wilbur winning the second set 6-1. In the third set, Wilbur had a 5-4 advantage before falling 7-5. With the overall score tied at 3-3, the deciding point was to come at the #5 position.
Grace Agster won the first set 6-3, but the Bucs won the second set 6-3. The Bucs took an early 3-0 lead in the third set and won 6-1, clinching the overall match.
The Terriers (13-2, 2-1) will host Furman on Sunday, March 30, weather permitting. The loss ended an eight-match winning streak for the Terriers. ETSU is 8-7 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play.
