Men’s Basketball Advances to SoCon Semifinals Behind 72-60 Victory Over No. 3 ETSU

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The No. 6 Wofford men's basketball team (17-15, 10-8) defeated the No. 3 ETSU Buccaneers (19-13, 12-6) 72-60 in the Southern Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday evening at Harrah's Cherokee Center. The Terriers advance to take on No. 7 VMI on Sunday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

Kyler Filewich notched his 12th double-double of the season and the 21st of his Wofford career. Filewich has now set the program record for most double-doubles in a career. Lee Skinner was the previous record holder with 20.

The Terriers outshot ETSU on the night as the team shot 44.7 percent (21-47) from the field and hit 11 threes at a 40.7 percent clip. ETSU shot 40.8 percent (20-49) and made seven three-pointers. Wofford totaled 11 assists on 21 made baskets while ETSU finished with nine assists. Kyler Filewich, Corey Tripp, and Justin Bailey paced the team with three helpers each.

"This is what Asheville is about," said head coach Dwight Perry. "The fact that we were able to outrebound them by 12 is a testament to our team's hard work on both ends of the floor. In order to come out of this tournament victorious, you have to win three games against three really good teams. We did step one of that tonight."

Four Terriers finished in double-digits with Jackson Sivills scoring 17 points to lead the team. The senior guard knocked down four threes including a deep ball that put the team ahead nine points with under a minute left. Kyler Filewich scored 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and the 21st of his Wofford career. Corey Tripp and Dillon Bailey scored 10 points each to round out the four double-digit scorers.

Wofford won the battle on the glass, outrebounding ETSU 38-26, including 11 offensive rebounds. Filewich led the team with 10 rebounds while Jackson Sivills tallied six boards. The Terriers totaled 17 second chance points compared to 11 by the Bucs.

"They have a great team and a lot of great players," said Kyler Filewich. "We knew we'd have to put everything we had into this game. There was a great amount of effort on both sides of the ball by everyone. We knew what we had to do, so we came in and did what we do."

ETSU came out of the gate firing as the team scored seven unanswered points to start the game. Kyler Filewich got the Terriers on the board followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Dillon Bailey. A breakaway layup from Justin Bailey capped off a 10-2 run to give Wofford a one-point lead with 15:13 left in the first half.

The Bucs quickly grabbed the lead back and did not give it up for the rest of the half. ETSU scored 10-straight points to give the team its largest lead of the game, 24-14. Jackson Sivills scored seven of the next eight points for Wofford, cutting the ETSU lead to just two points. Kyler Filewich would hit a and-one layup before the buzzer to tie the game at 27-all at the break.

Jackson Sivills picked up where he left off in the second half, nailing back-to-back deep balls to give the team a 33-27 lead early in the second stanza. The Terriers controlled a comfortable lead for the next several minutes until ETSU went on a 10-1 run to regain the lead with 12:01 remaining in the SoCon quarterfinals.

The Terriers tied it back up, however, and went on a monstrous 11-0 run that was kickstarted by a four-point play from Justin Bailey. Kyler Filewich chipped in a layup along with a huge three-pointer from Corey Tripp. Kahmare Holmes finished off the run with a layup to give the team a 65-54 advantage with 2:31 left in the game.

"The flare screen was great," said Justin Bailey on his four-point play. "It felt good coming out of my hands, and I was able to make the shot at the line. That gave us the momentum to stack together stops. We were hitting shots and ultimately, we were able to win the game."

ETSU cut it to six points with 1:25 remaining, but Jackson Sivills put the nail in the coffin with a three-pointer to put the Terriers up nine with under a minute left. Wofford would convert on a pair of free throws, ultimately defeating No. 3 ETSU 72-60 in the SoCon Quarterfinals.

The Terriers will take on No. 7 VMI in the SoCon Semifinals on Sunday, March 9, on ESPNU. The Terriers are 3-0 all-time against VMI in the SoCon Tournament. The teams last matched up in the postseason in 2022, and it was Wofford claiming a 68-66 victory.
