Wofford Softball Downs Winthrop In 11 Innings

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford softball team (20-15, 2-4) took down the Winthrop Eagles (22-15) 3-2 in walk-off fashion on Tuesday, April 1, at Hope Field. After tying the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Terriers needed 11 innings before Hannah Madox drove in Brianna Stanley for the game winning run.

Freshman pitcher Natalya Solo got the start for the Terriers, throwing six innings. Solo gave up two early runs on five hits while striking out three batters. Margaret Axelson earned the win after pitching the final five innings of the game. Axelson allowed one hit and zero walks on six strikeouts. Wofford pitching stranded 13 runners on base this game which was the key in the win.

Winthrop gained the early lead with a solo home run in the first inning and then added to it with an RBI double in the third. Salo settled into the game after the third inning giving up two hits for the rest of her outing. The Terrier bats woke up in the sixth inning as Abby Gossett doubled in two runners to tie up the game 2-2 in the sixth and force extra innings.

In extras, Coach Chelsea Butler turned to Axelson in relief which gave the Terriers an opportunity to capitalize in the extra frames. In the bottom of the 11th, senior Hannah Maddox, in her fourth start of the season, hit a sharp line drive that scored Brianna Stanley from third ending the game in a 3-2 Wofford victory.

Wofford travels to Columbia, South Carolina, tomorrow April, 2, to play #6 South Carolina. The Gamecocks will be the first power-4 and ranked opponent Wofford has faced in the program's history. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. on SEC Network+.
