Columbia, S.C.- The Wofford softball team (20-16, 2-4) fell short in Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday, April 2, 2-0 against the University of South Carolina. The Terriers held the #6 team in the nation to just two runs as the Terriers had opportunities as they left six runners on base in the game.
Margaret Axelson got the nod against the Gamecocks in the midweek matchup and pitched a gem, going the complete game with two runs given up, six hits allowed, one strikeout and three walks allowed. This performance came after pitching six innings the previous night in the eleven-inning win against Winthrop.
The Gamecocks got to Axelson early before she settled into the game, scoring two runs on the Terrier ace in the first inning. However, that was all the #25 scoring team in the nation, averaging seven runs a game, could muster as the Terrier defense and pitching held strong the rest of the game not surrendering a run.
The Terrier offense was silent for the majority of this game until the top of the fifth. South Carolina walked two batters, then a Kaytlin Greenwood hit loaded the bases with no outs. With their backs against the wall the Gamecocks turned to their ace to get them out of the jam. After two quick outs, Brianna Stanley came up to bat. She drove a ball deep into right center, but the South Carolina center fielder tracked the ball down and made a miraculous catch preventing three runs from scoring. The Terriers would not get a hit for the remainder of the contest, losing the game 2-0.
Wofford returns to action Friday, April 4, against Mercer in Southern Conference action at Hope Field. First pitch on Friday is at 5 pm.
