Men’s Tennis Falls 4-3 To Furman To End Regular Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Furman at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers were able to win the doubles point, but the Paladins came back and won four of the six singles matches to earn the win.   
 
The doubles matches began with the Paladins winning 6-3 at the #3 position. Wofford was able to tie the point with a 6-4 win by Hugo Rask and Ian Rasheed at the #2 position. The final match at the #1 position was tied at 6-6 when Robbie Young and Jack Deveney won the tiebreaker 7-5 to claim the doubles point for the Terriers.
 
In singles, Wofford and Furman both won the first set in three of the six matches. The Paladins won 6-3, 6-2 at the #1 position and then Daniel Clivio had a 6-4, 6-4 win at the #3 position for the Terriers. After Furman had a 6-2, 6-4 win at the #5 position, Jack Deveney posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at the #2 position to give Wofford a 3-2 overall lead in the match.
 
The final two singles matches both went three sets. At the #6 position, Owen Dooley had a 6-1 win in the first set, but lost the second and third sets by a 6-1 score. With the overall match tied at 3-3, the #4 position would decide the outcome. Ian Rasheed lost the first set 0-6, but responded with a 7-5 win in the second set. The third set was won 6-1 by the Paladins to clinch the overall match.
 
The match marked the final home contest for seniors Mark Endler, Max Graham, and Robbie Young. The trio was honored on Friday afternoon due to rain delaying the match by one day.
 
Wofford (6-12, 1-6) will be the seventh seed in the Southern Conference Championship, which will begin on Thursday, April 17, in Chattanooga. The Terriers will face the #2 seed Mercer at 10:30 a.m. The Paladins are 7-14 overall and 3-4 in SoCon play.
