Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In the quarterfinals of the 2025 Southern Conference Championship, the Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 4-0 by Mercer at the Champions Club. The Bears, seeded second in the tournament, won the doubles point and then took three singles matches to clinch the win.
In doubles, the All-SoCon first team pairing of
Robbie Young and
Jack Deveney had a 6-2 win at the #1 position for Wofford. The Bears answered with a 6-2 win at the #2 position. In the deciding match at the #3 position, it was tied at 5-5 before the Bears won 7-6 (7-3) to claim the doubles point.
Mercer took the first set in five of the six singles matches, including two that went to tiebreakers. The Bears won the #5 position and the #4 position in straight sets to take a 3-0 lead in the overall match. At #6 singles,
Owen Dooley lost the first set, but won the second set 6-3 before falling in the third set.
The remaining three matches were unfinished. Mercer was leading 7-6, 5-2 at the #1 position.
Daniel Clivio won the first set at the #3 position and lost the second set. Mercer was leading 3-2 in the third set. The #2 position was in the third set, as the Bears won the first set before
Jack Deveney won the second set and had a 3-2 lead in the third set.
Wofford (6-13, 1-6) was the seventh seed in the tournament. The Bears (12-7, 6-1), who tied for first in the regular season with Samford and ETSU, advance to face Samford in the semifinals.
