Baseball Falls Late at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team was locked in a pitchers' duel early at UNCG Baseball Stadium Sunday afternoon, but the UNCG Spartans broke through with four runs scattered over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure a 4-1 victory. The Terriers drop to 22-15 (2-7 SoCon) with the result as the Spartans improve to 17-18 (7-2 SoCon).

Wofford used three total pitchers with Kenny Michaels (3-2) making the start but suffering a tough-luck loss. He tossed 5.0 innings, his longest outing as a starter. He surrendered just three hits and one run with three walks and six strikeouts. Carter Rasmussen allowed three runs in 2.0 innings before Alec Bouchard pitched a scoreless frame.

Grant Aycock (2-3) picked up the win as the UNCG starter after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings. Rob Ready (2) earned a save by pitching the final 2.0 frames with no hits or runs allowed.

Runs were at a premium in the contest, but it was not without each team having chances. The Spartans held just two more hits, 7-5, and both teams left eight runners on base.

Wofford's five hits were dispersed evenly with Tyler Bak, David Wiley, Ryan Wynn, Niko Brini, and Tanner Hardin accumulating them. Brini's was a double for the lone extra-base knock by a Terrier. Bak added a walk to reach twice, and Tyler Hare worked a pair of walks to also reach twice. James Layman added a fourth Terrier free pass.

The contest was a pitchers' duel to open, and both starters had to work out of several jams. Wofford had two runners on with one out in the first, but a double play ended the threat. Kenny Michaels left a runner stranded in the bottom of the first after a double.

Both teams left two runners on in the second before a quiet third for both. UNCG threatened again in the fifth when two runners reached base, and a two-out wild pitch pushed them both into scoring position. However, Michaels clamped down to induce a lineout to escape unscathed.

UNCG finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on and one out, a double steal pushed both into scoring position. The lead runner would scurry home on a groundout, and Michaels limited the damage by catching the following batter looking on strike three. The Spartans held a 1-0 edge.

The Spartans added one more run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, pushing their advantage to 2-0.

Wofford got a run back in the top of the seventh, cracking onto the scoreboard. Tanner Hardin singled with one out and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Tyler Bak then dropped a single into left field that allowed Hardin to come home, pulling Wofford within a run at 2-1.

In the bottom of the inning, the Spartans created some separation with two more runs. An RBI triple pushed across the first, and he would then score on a wild pitch to make the margin 4-1.

Neither team was able to mount any more offense in the eighth or ninth, sealing the 4-1 margin in favor of UNCG.

The Terriers return home for a midweek match-up on Tuesday, April 15. Wofford hosts USC Upstate at Russell C. King Field in the third of three midweek meetings this season. It will serve as a rubber match with each squad owning a win thus far in the season series. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. with the contest streaming on ESPN+.
