Wofford Softball Completes Sweep at Western Carolina

Cullowhee N.C. - The Wofford softball team (27-15, 8-4 SoCon) completed the series sweep in the final game at Western Carolina (20-22, 4-7 SoCon) on Sunday, April 14. The final game of the series saw freshman Natalya Salo throw a complete game shutout combined with the Terrier offense breaking the game open late to give Wofford the comfortable 7-0 win.

Head coach Chelsea Butler turned to freshman Natalya Salo to start game three and she delivered one of her best performances of the year so far. Pitching a complete game shutout, her first since February 15 against Fairfield, with eight strikeouts and five walks.

The Terrier offense threatened early, leaving five runners on base in the first three innings combined with five hits. The Wofford bats would break through in the top of the fourth, when Hope Ingle smashed a three-run blast on a hanging breaking ball to give Wofford the 3-0 lead.

The Catamounts' best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth, with runners on second and third with two outs. But the young Salo clutched up on a 2-2 count, striking out Western Carolina's clean-up hitter to end the inning.

Wofford's offense woke up in the seventh inning scoring four runs on six hits in the frame. Brianna Stanley started the inning with a solo home run to give Wofford the 4-0 lead. The next batter, Gracie Parker, hit a triple down the right field line and Kalli Petty was able to drive her in with a squeeze play. After another hit followed by a double steal by pinch-runners Desirae Devine and Megan Towery set up Wofford in a prime opportunity to score. Kaytlin Greenwood performed another squeeze play bunt that drove in Devine to put the score at 6-0. Hope Ingle ended the bunt bonanza with a squeeze play of her own to score the seventh and final run of the game. Salo reentered in the bottom of the inning to close out the Catamounts and give Wofford the 7-0 win.

Wofford softball extends their win streak to seven with the second series sweep of the season. Coach Butler earned her 50 all-time win as a head coach.

Wofford will return to action Tuesday, April 15, at Winthrop. First pitch is slated for 6:00pm in Rock Hill.
