SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a match that was much closer than the final score would indicate, the Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by Mercer at the Reeves Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears won two of the three doubles matches and then claimed all six singles matches, including three that went to a third-set tiebreaker.
In doubles, the Terriers earned a 6-3 win at the #1 position by
Robbie Young and
Jack Deveney. The #3 position was won 6-4 by the Bears. The deciding match was at the #2 position, where
Hugo Rask and
Ian Rasheed had a 2-1 lead before falling 3-6.
The Bears secured the opening set in four of the six matches. They won at the #2 and #4 positions to take a 3-0 overall lead in the match. With a 6-4, 6-3 at the #5 position, the Bears were able to clinch the match.
The remaining three matches were decided by third-set tiebreakers. At #1 singles,
Robbie Young lost the first set 3-6 before winning the second set 6-4. The Bears claimed the tiebreaker. In the #3 singles match,
Daniel Clivio won the first set 7-6 (7-2). The Bears won the second set 5-7 and took the tiebreaker. In his first career singles match, freshman
Jacob Raider won the first set at the #6 position 7-6 (7-5) but lost the second set and the tiebreaker.
Wofford (6-11, 1-5) will host Furman for the final home match of the season on Friday, April 11, for Senior Day. The Bears are 11-6 overall and 6-0 in SoCon play.
