Women’s Lacrosse Second Half Rally Falls Short At Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team rallied in the second half of the 2025 Big South Tournament semifinals but were defeated 15-9 by Mercer at Five Star Stadium. The Bears had a 12-2 lead at the half and were up 14-2 early in the third quarter. The Terriers ended the game on a 7-1 scoring run.
 
Wofford was led by Carlie Cutinella with four goals and an assist. Olivia Graebner added two goals and an assist, while Carley Irvin, Bria Foley, and McKenzie Moeller each had goals. Irvin tied the career goals record at Wofford with 111. Both teams had 25 shots in the game, with Ella Smithers making seven saves for the Terriers.
 
The Bears had 23 turnovers to only 16 by the Terriers. Wofford caused nine turnovers, including four by Olivia Graebner and three by Brooke Meltcher. Meltcher led the team with six ground balls as the Terriers had a 22 to 17 lead in that category. Mercer had a 20 to 7 advantage in draw controls, with Mia Leon winning three for Wofford.
 
Mercer got on the board first with a goal less than a minute into the game and had a 3-0 lead after five minutes of play. Wofford's Carlie Cutinella scored at 7:10 in the quarter to make it a 3-1 game. The Bears got the next three goals and then Olivia Graebner found the back of the net to cut the lead to 6-2 with 1:03 left in the quarter. Mercer added a goal in the final minute for a 7-2 advantage after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, the Bears added to the lead and were up 12-2 with 2:15 left in the quarter.
 
The Bears scored the first two goals of the third quarter. A Wofford goal with 11:09 on the clock by Carlie Cutinella ended the 8-0 scoring run by the Bears and made it a 14-3 game. After neither team scored for nine minutes, Wofford added a goal with 2:14 left in the third quarter by Olivia Graebner, and as time expired in the quarter Carlie Cutinella scored for a 14-5 margin.
 
The Terriers had five shots in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, including one that hit the post, but were unable to score. The Bears extended their lead to 15-5 on a woman-up goal with 11:19 left in the game. McKenzie Moeller and Bria Foley scored back-to-back goals for the Terriers as the score was 15-7 with 6:08 remaining on the clock. Less than a minute later, Carlie Cutinella made it three straight goals for the Terriers as it was a 15-8 game. Wofford kept up the pressure late as Carley Irvin scored with 40 seconds left for a 15-9 final score.
 
Mercer, the #1 seed, improves to 11-7 overall and will face the winner of the #2 High Point and #3 Furman semifinal game. The Bears were led by Sofia D'Angelo with four goals and an assist as seven different players scored goals.
 
Wofford was the #4 seed and ends the season at 9-10 overall. The nine wins are the most in school history.
