Birmingham, AL- Wofford softball's opening game of a weekend series at Samford was continued Saturday, May 3, and resulted in a Wofford 4-3 loss to the Samford Bulldogs. The final two games of the series were cancelled due to bad weather.
The game was started by Margaret Axelson, who went the complete game allowing 10 hits with four runs and three walks surrendered. The Terrier starter also struck out two in the loss moving her record to 14-8 on the year.
The game began on Friday afternoon and was rough early as Samford was threatened with runners on first and second with no outs before the game was delayed due to inclement weather. The game resumed on Saturday afternoon and a Terrier defensive error scored a run for Samford to put them up 1-0. A double play and then a fly out got Wofford out of the inning only down by one run.
The Terriers responded with a three-run third inning, where a Kate Platte double brought in Kaytlin Greenwood to tie the score at 1-1. Hope Ingle added to the score with a two-run shot over the wall in left field, her eighth of the season, to put the Terriers up 3-1. Samford struck back in the bottom of the third to tie the game back up at 3-3.
The game entered back into a pitcher's duel as both teams were unable to score until the sixth inning, as the Bulldogs squeaked across a run with a single down the line right by Gracie Parker's glove at third base to put the Terriers down 4-3. Wofford got a runner on base in the top of the seventh inning but was unable to push them across the plate.
Wofford will not continue the series against Samford due to inclement weather. The Terriers will return to action in the Southern Conference tournament. Seeding will be determined Sunday, May 4, after regular season play has been completed.
