Goal From Simes And Byron Not Enough as Wofford Men’s Soccer Falls To Campbell

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford Men's Soccer team (3-5-0) dropped its third home game in a row against the Campbell Camels (3-2-3), 2-3, on Saturday night at Snyder Field.

First Half
Wofford came out in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the second game in a row. Freshman, Cooper Dissinger, found his way into the starting lineup in the absence of Jakob Andersson, who received a red card last time out. The Camels had the first chance of the match with a simple shot from Pepe Hinterschuster. Each team had their fair share of possession and chances with Campbell leading in the first 20 with three shots to Wofford's one.

On a quick throw in, the Campbell winger was able to get around the Wofford defender and whipped a ball into the box. A Camel was free at the top of the box to make a touch and score the first goal of the match. With some personnel changes after the goal, the Terriers were looking for an answer but found themselves further down after the Camels cleaned up a poor clearance in the box.

Fighting for a late goal in the half, Wofford pushed into the Campbell box in the last minute. An attempted clearance hit the arm of a defender in the box, awarding the Terriers their first penalty attempt. As Nathan Simes lined up to take it, the goalie dove the wrong way, giving the senior his and the team's first home goal this season, just before the half.

Second Half
The Camels came out of the half with intensity, driving into the Terrier box early. An attacker drove into the box and was tripped up by a Wofford defender in the 46th minute. The Camels stepped up to the spot and elected to chip the ball, giving Hinterschuster an easy save. Just one minute later, Samuel Byron received a long ball across the field and used his speed to brush past a defender and power a shot into the upper right corner for his second goal in two games.

Campbell dominated the chances in the second half with 7 corners and 13 shots to Wofford's zero and two. The Terrier defense eventually gave way in the 81st minute as a ball found the feet of a Campbell attacker who flicked it up to himself for a volley, hitting the crossbar before crossing the line. The Camels effectively managed the time left in the game, dribbling into the corner before the final whistle, 2-3.
