ATLANTA, GA.– The Wofford Men's Soccer team (3-5-1) pulled together a draw after entering the second half down at the Georgia State Panthers (2-2-4), 1-1, on Tuesday night at the GSU Soccer Complex.
The Terriers returned to the field in the same formation, 4-2-3-1, for the third game in a row.
Jakob Andersson returned to the squad after serving a one match suspension.
Gavin Lewis earned his first appearance and start, replacing fellow freshman
Niklas Hegle.
First Half
Both teams played in a possession-based style, focusing on short passes and moving the opposition's defense. GSU was able to get off the first shot of the match in the fifth minute, an easy scoop save for
Pepe Hinterschuster.
The Terriers had an early sequence in the eighth minute with a breakaway pass from
Nathan Simes to the wing, finding
Stewart Patnaud. The senior was able to make a move and get a shot off, which was blocked. The ball popped up in the air for
Kalle Rahbek to attempt a bicycle kick, which was also blocked. Finally, the ball fell to Simes, another blocked shot for Wofford, all within 20 seconds.
A long ball played from deep in the Panther midfield found the foot of the attacker who was able to make a move around the defender and goalkeeper to place GSU up in the 14th minute. Wofford looked to make some changes through substitutions, but neither team was able to create many dangerous chances outside of the opening fifteen minutes.
Second Half
The Panthers had two strong chances early in the half with crosses from the wing, barely missing their targets. The Terriers also had two strong chances early with wingers receiving the ball in the box but were either blocked or cleared away by the GSU defense.
In the 57
th minute,
Samuel Byron was brought down just outside of the box for a free kick.
Kalle Rahbek stepped over the ball and powered a shot toward goal, hitting the crossbar. The ball fell into the box, and out of a scramble,
Adam Celik came out with a shot to equalize the game.
Georgia State did not fold and looked to bring them back on top with multiple dangerous balls in the 15 minutes that followed the goal, but the Terrier defense was able to clear away the danger. As the final five minutes approached, each team was desperate to get the late winner, throwing numbers forward and ditching the possession for quick counter play. Neither team was able to find the leg up and the game finished, 1-1.
