Men’s Soccer Earns First Home Win With Late Goal From Simes

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team (4-5-1) struck late to take their first home win of the season against the Queens Royals (4-4-1), 2-1, on Tuesday night at Snyder Field. This marks the first of four straight home games for the Terriers.

The Terriers returned to the field in the same formation, 4-2-3-1, for the fourth game in a row. No changes were made to the starting lineup. The starters included three seniors, two juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.

First Half
A light drizzle of rain before kickoff made the ball move quickly, requiring greater focus on technique. This was evident within the first two minutes as the Queens' goalkeeper lost their footing on a clearance and slipped. The ball fell to Samuel Byron who was unable to control the ball in front of goal for the earliest chance of the game.

The Terriers were pouncing on poor touches from the Royals early, winning it back in the midfield. Four Terriers on the counter found a shot from Stewart Patnaud pushed wide. Kalle Rahbek was able to pick up the scraps to place Wofford ahead in the fifth minute.

Wofford continued to dominate the half in every category, but was not able to extend their lead. The Terriers had 12 shots to the Royals five. Of those shots, six were on target to their one. Both teams received a yellow card infraction. Wofford had a slim edge on corners, two to one.

Second Half
Early in the half, Queens had started to gain more possession of the ball. The Royals looked to find an equalizer quickly, serving multiple balls into the box. One ball slipped through the Wofford backline after a missed clearance. Queens seemed to have a sure goal, with the attacker one-on-one, but Pepe Hinterschuster made an incredible split save to keep the Terriers in the lead. The Royals' assault persisted as Hinterschuster was forced to make another great save. Queens found their equalizer in the 61st minute as a shot was redirected in the box into the bottom right corner.

A sea of yellow cards ensued shortly after the goal, Queens earning two and Wofford one of their own over the next 15 minutes. Two additional fouls were called in that time. The Royals carried most of the momentum as they held the four shots following the goal, but only one was put on frame.

While Queens seemed to have things going for them, a lackadaisical back-pass found the pressure of a quick Samuel Byron. This forced the keeper to scramble, kicking it right to the feet of leading goal scorer, Nathan Simes, who redirected it into the goal for a Wofford lead in the 83rd minute. A late push from the Royals fell short, and the game finished 2-1.

Inside the Numbers
  • Hinterschuster set a season high with seven saves.
  • 18 shots are a season high for the Terriers.
