Football Hosts Richmond For Home Opener

THE RICHMOND GAME
Wofford will host Richmond on Saturday evening for the home opener at Gibbs Stadium ... Last week the Terriers began the season on the road with a 16-15 loss at South Carolina State, while the Spiders were defeated 21-14 by Lehigh on the road ... The Terriers are coming off a 5-7 record last year, with a 3-5 mark in the Southern Conference ... This is the third meeting between Wofford and Richmond in a series that began in 2007 ... The last meeting was in 2024, with the Terriers winning 26-19 in Richmond ... The Spiders were 10-3 overall last season and a perfect 8-0 in the CAA to win the conference title  ... They fell to Lehigh in the first round of the 2024 NCAA FCS Playoffs ... This is their first season in the Patriot League and they were picked to finish second overall in the preseason poll ... The Spiders are receiving votes in the Stats Perform FCS poll and in the FCS Coaches poll ... Be sure to stay until the end of the game for postgame fireworks!

TERRIER TOP NOTES
Here are the top notes of interest heading into the home opener against Richmond ...
    • Wofford opens with three of the first four games on the road for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
    • Shawn Watson enters his third full season as head coach of the Terriers. 
    • Wofford returns ten starters overall, including four on offense, four on defense and two specialists.  
    • Six players were named to the All-Southern Conference preseason team. C.J. Coombes earned a spot on the first team and he is also on the preseason watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award. 
    • The Wofford defense was 59th in the nation and fourth in the SoCon, with the passing defense 39th overall and first in the SoCon. 
    • The defense had 13 interceptions as part of 21 overall turnovers gained, which ranked 25th in the nation. Wofford had a positive turnover margin for the second-straight season. 

ABOUT WOFFORD
Shawn Watson is entering his third full season as head coach of the Terriers. On offense, the offensive line features returning starters Mason Howard, Quincy Hughes, and Luke Moise. Clayton Hixon started the final three games last season at center and Chizara Alegbe will be at the other spot. The pro spread offense usually sees three receivers, one tight end and one running back in most formations. C.J. Adams, Ivory Aikens, and Isaiah Scott are set to start at receiver, with Scott the lone returning starter. Transfer Matt Flanders will start at tight end, while Kyle Parsons is the top returner at running back  At quarterback, Jayden Whitaker earned the starting spot after a competition in fall camp and will be backed-up by Ethan Drumm. 
    The defense remains a 3-4 base, with the defensive line led by returners Brandon Maina and Marion Smokes. They are joined by Seth Foster. The linebacker position has four new starters in Alijah Williams, Javario Tinch, Jalen Rambert, and Elijah Washington. In the secondary, safeties C.J. Coombes and Maximus Pulley return as starters at safety, with Darius Malcolm and R.J. Brunson taking over at the cornerback positions. 
    The special teams will see Connor Deviney handling placekicking, Sam Spence on kickoffs, Cavan Craig at punter, and Blake Shirley at long snapper. Maddox Cowart will hold for the Terriers.

TORNADO OF TERRIERS
Kids are welcome to join the "Tornado of Terriers" and lead the team as they run out onto the field. Parents can bring their children to the field level by using the stairs at the bottom of section H1 or the gate on the home side of the Verandah Lot at 5:30 PM.

TERRIER TOWN
New this season is "Terrier Town," which is located directly in front of Gibbs Stadium on Cummings Street. It will open at 2:00 p.m. and feature activities for the whole family and a chance to interact with our fall sports student-athletes. The event will feature food trucks, inflatables, a DJ, and family-friendly games. 
 
TERRIER WALK
See the team before the game on the Terrier Walk, which begins at 3:40 PM  at the horseshoe behind Old Main and continues down Evins Street to the Verandah Lot. 

INSIDE WOFFORD FOOTBALL WITH COACH SHAWN WATSON
Wofford Sports Properties, the multimedia rights partner for Wofford College Athletics, has announced the return of "Inside Wofford Football with Coach Shawn Watson." The show, sponsored by Yokohama, is hosted by the voice of the Terriers, Jim Noble. "Inside Wofford Football" begins in September and will debut every Monday during the football season. Fans can listen to the "Inside Wofford Football" podcast in a variety of ways, including on the iTunes, Amazon, Google and Spotify podcast platforms, along with www.woffordterriers.com/podcast. GOAL LINE CLUB
Help carry the ball for the Terriers and sign up to be a 2025 Goal Line Club member. Pledge as little as $1 to contribute to an athletic endowed scholarship. Established in 2012, the Goal Line Club has proven hugely successful in helping raise scholarship dollars for the Wofford College Athletics Endowment. Goal Line Club members have donated a combined total of more than $375,000 for the Goal Line Club Endowed Scholarship Fund since the inception of this initiative. All tickets at Gibbs Stadium will be digital. To optimize your game day experience, please log in to your TicketReturn account and download your tickets today. By doing so, it will allow us time to provide assistance prior to gameday, should you need help navigating TicketReturn's site.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Wofford began a clear bag policy in 2018. Fans will be permitted to enter with a clear bag that does not exceed 12" in height by 6" in depth by 12" in width. A simple one-gallon clear plastic bag, such as a Ziploc bag or similar, is acceptable. Fans will be allowed to carry in a small clutch bag, approximately the size of a hand or 4.5" by 6.5", with or without a handle or strap. An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at the game.

GAME DAY PARKING
Reminder that all football parking lots open 4 hours prior to kickoff (2:00 PM on September 6). Please note traffic patterns have changed due to the closure of Cummings Street in front of Gibbs Stadium. A parking map can be found HERE.

STUDENT PARKING
The following parking areas will need to be cleared by Friday (Sept. 5) at 5 p.m.
  • Verandah lot.
  • The first two rows of the Mungo Student Center lot nearest the Mungo Student Center.
  • The Cummings Street lot.
  • Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium side and back lots.
The following lots are available for student parking as you move your vehicles from the above lots, which are reserved for game day.
  • G2 lot, in the grassy area between the back of the Stewart H. Johnson Greek Village and Liberty Trail.  NOTE: G2 is free on Friday but will be $20 after 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
  • The lot that once was attached to Calvary Baptist Church, near the senior village apartments. The church has been demolished, but parking remains available to students.
  • Wofford spaces in the lot adjacent to Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. These will be available Friday afternoon after 4 p.m.
  • The horseshoe between Shipp and DuPré Halls (behind Main Building), after 4 p.m., Friday.
  • The Montgomery Music Building lot.
  • Lots adjacent to the Office of Marketing and Communications and Information Technology Services (across Church Street) will also be available to students who need to move their vehicles.
FACULTY AND STAFF PARKING
The Play60 Lot adjacent to Twitty Street is available for parking and tailgating for all home games for faulty and staff.
