Late Basket From Gabby Mundy Lifts Women’s Basketball to 61-57 Win at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – Freshman Gabby Mundy sank the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds left in the contest to lift the Wofford women's basketball team to a 61-57 victory over ETSU at Freedom Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs built a 15-point lead in the first quarter, but the Terriers answered and led by as many as 12 points early in the fourth quarter. The score was tied with 35 seconds remaining before the bucket and a pair of free throws by Mundy put the game away.
 
Wofford improves to 7-9 and 1-1 in league play, while ETSU falls to 7-10 and 0-2. Gabby Mundy finished the day with her second career double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
 
Wofford finished the day shooting 20-of-60 (33.3%) from the field and made six three-pointers on 21 attempts. ETSU Shot 21-of-61 (34.4%) from the field and had six triples. The Terriers shot 15-of-16 from the free throw line, including nine in the second quarter. Gabby Mundy and Queen Ikhiuwu led the way with 17 points each. Elli Porter chipped in 10 points.
 
The Terriers outrebounded ETSU 44-38, including 14 offensive rebounds. Wofford totaled 12 second chance points. The Bucs had the advantage in the paint, outscoring Wofford 24-22. Gabby Mundy paced the team with a career-high 11 rebounds. Queen Ikhiuwu was just short of a double-double, pulling down seven boards.
 
Toni Warren scored the first points of the afternoon after sinking a pull-up jumper, as Wofford jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on. ETSU answered with five-straight points, but Queen Ikhiuwu put home a midrange shot to bring Wofford within a point. The Bucs rattled off nine-straight points in return, taking a 14-4 lead with under five minutes left in the frame. A three-pointer from Queen Ikhiuwu ended the skid. Back-to-back triples from ETSU kickstarted another 8-0 run for the Bucs. The Terriers would enter the second quarter trailing 24-14. Queen Ikhiuwu totaled nine points in the quarter.
 
The second stanza was full of free throws, as the first field goal scored by either team did not come until 1:22 left in the quarter. The Terriers finished 9-of-10 from the free throw line during the quarter and used the shots at the charity stripe to churn out a 9-1 run, bringing the deficit to four points, 27-23, with 1:37 left in the half. Despite no baskets made in the first nine minutes of the quarter, three were scored in the final 1:22 of action. Maddie Heiss scored the first, and Gabby Mundy rattled home a layup before the end of the half. The Terriers would trail 31-27 at the close of the first half.
 
Wofford started the second half with five unanswered points, as Elli Porter buried a three to give Wofford its first lead of the day. The five points were part of a 20-7 run during the quarter. Gabby Mundy and Elli Porter knocked down two triples apiece during the ETSU skid. The Terriers held ETSU to 3-of-19 shooting during the stanza, taking a 49-39 lead after the third quarter.
 
Maddie Heiss scored the first basket of the fourth frame, but ETSU responded with a score the next possession down. That bucket was the start of a 10-2 run for the Bucs, as Wofford held a 53-49 lead with 3:43 left in the contest. A pair of free throws from Queen Ikhiuwu furthered the lead to six points. ETSU fought back, however, draining a three-pointer to tie the game with 35 seconds remaining. Freshman Gabby Mundy scored the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds left in the game. Mundy would ice the contest with a pair of free throws, leading to a 61-57 Wofford win at ETSU.
 
The Terriers will return to Spartanburg for the conference home opener against Western Carolina University on Thursday, January 15. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
