The Terriers Dominate First Half In Road Win Over The Mocs

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Wofford men's basketball team avenged its early loss to the Chattanooga Mocs on Thursday evening, winning 81-55, in McKenzie Arena. The Terriers had an 18-0 run to close out the first half and led by as much as 29 points in a dominant road win.

The Terriers (15-7, 7-2) were led by Kahmare Holmes and Chace Watley, with 14 points each. Nils Machowski got 11 rebounds while Cayden Vasko had five assists. Holmes had one steal. Machowski and Brian Sumpter had a block each. Four Terriers reached double-digits.

"The players are everything. They have to do what you ask them to do," said head coach Kevin Giltner. "I think coach [Drew] Gibson had an unbelievable scouting report ready for us…But the players deserve most of [the credit] because they actually did it."

How It Happened
Kahmare Holmes found the first bucket for the Terriers with a three on the wing. Neither team could find a solid footing on offense, but Chattanooga held a four-point lead going into the first media timeout. Brendan Rigsbee scored to spark a 9-0 run for the Terriers after the stop, grabbing four of the points himself. This swung the lead into Wofford's favor, 16-11, with 12 minutes to go in the first half.

The Mocs came out of the stoppage with a 6-0 run to snatch back the lead, but this was quickly shut down by a 6-0 run from the Terriers. Chattanooga was able to keep things close before Wofford went on another 6-0 run thanks to a strong effort on the offensive glass from Rex Stirling. Stirling had two offensive rebounds in the same sequence before finishing at the basket.

Wofford held an eight-point lead heading into the final three minutes of the half, 30-22. Vasko continued the momentum with a massive slam dunk. Wofford was able to stop the Mocs from scoring for the last seven minutes of the half while extending the run to 18-0 before heading to the locker room, 42-22.
Holmes found the first points of the half from the line, going one for two. Chattanooga would finally find a point from the line, but the Terriers would not stop, scoring another five points before the Mocs found their first field goal in ten minutes from three. UTC's offense started to click again, finding a way to cut the deficit below 20 with 14 minutes left in the game, 51-33.

The teams battled back and forth over the next stretch of the game, with Wofford slowly able to widen the gap with multiple and one conversions. Only one field goal was made by either team for over four minutes, while the Mocs were able to grab four of the six points during that time. UTC was the team to snap that drought with back-to-back three-pointers, leading to a timeout from the Wofford bench. With six minutes left, the Terriers led, 65-48.

Wofford snapped back right away, snagging an 8-0 run, reaching a 25-point lead with three minutes left to play. They were able to push that further with a corner three from Chace Watley and Jayden Tyler converting one of two from the line. 29 would be the furthest Wofford could get, avenging their earlier loss, 81-55.
