LA JOLLA, Calif. – In the first of two matches on the West Coast, the Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by UC San Diego at the Northview Tennis Courts. The Tritons won the doubles point and then picked up four of the six singles matches for the win.
 
The Tritons took the first doubles match at the #2 position and added a win at the #3 position to claim the point. At #1 doubles, Jack Deveney and Ian Rasheed were tied at 4-4 and trailed 5-4 when the match was unfinished.
 
In singles, each team won the first set in three matches. At #2 singles, the Tritons won in three sets, which was followed by a straight set win at the #1 position. Ian Rasheed claimed a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win at the #6 position to earn a point for the Terriers. A three-set match was won by the Tritons at the #4 position, which clinched the overall match. At #5 singles, Jack Burdell won the first set 7-6 (9-7), dropped the second set 5-7, and then the third set tiebreaker was won by the Tritons 11-9. In the final match to finish, Parker Mariencheck won the first set 6-3, lost the second set 4-6, but rallied to win the third set 6-4.
 
Wofford will play at Point Loma on Saturday to complete the California trip. The home opener will be on Saturday, February 7, against Converse and Emmanuel.
