SAN DIEGO, Calif. – On Saturday, the Wofford College men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Point Loma at the PLNU Tennis Courts. The Terriers won the doubles point and then claimed four of the six singles matches.
In doubles, the Terriers had an early lead in all three matches.
Julian Brager-Carlsen and
Valdemar Dubin earned a 6-3 win at the #2 position. At the #3 position,
Hugo Rask and
Ben Reinauer had a 5-4 lead and closed it out at 7-5 to clinch the doubles point. The #1 position was unfinished, with
Ian Rasheed and
Jack Deveney leading 6-5.
Wofford won the first set in four of the singles matches.
Jack Burdell earned a win at the #5 position with a 6-2, 6-0 result. After the Sea Lions took the #4 position,
Ian Rasheed claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win at the #6 position for a 3-1 overall lead in the match. The Terriers clinched the match when
Parker Mariencheck picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at the #3 position.
Two matches went to the third set.
Jack Deveney won the first set 7-6 at the #2 position but dropped the second set 6-2. He won the third set tiebreaker 10-5. At the #1 position,
Daniel Clivio lost the first set 2-6 but rallied to win the second set 6-3. The third set went to a tiebreaker, which was won 12-10 by the Sea Lions.
"We delivered a gutsy performance on the road against a good team," said head coach
Rod Ray. "I'm encouraged by our team and look forward to being back home next weekend."
Wofford (1-2) returns to the Reeves Tennis Center on Saturday, February 7, for the home opener doubleheader against Emmanuel (11:00 a.m.) and Converse (3:00 p.m.).
