CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the season opener, the Wofford College women's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon at the Gary Clark Banks Sr. Tennis Center. The Terriers won the doubles point, and then the Bucs claimed four of the six singles matches for the win.
In doubles,
Quinn Bernthal and
Katie Godfree won 6-2 at the #2 position.
Marie Henriksen and
Grace Stout added a 6-3 win at the #3 position to claim the doubles point. The match at the #3 position was unfinished.
Singles play began with the Bucs winning the first set in five of the six matches. The Bucs won at the #3, #5, and #1 positions in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead in the overall match. A 7-6, 6-2 win at the #2 position by Charleston Southern clinched the overall match.
The final two singles matches both went to a deciding third set. At #4 singles, freshman
Katie Godfree lost the first set 4-6 but won the second set 6-4 and took the third set 6-4. Freshman Marie Henrikson took the first set at the #6 position 6-4 and lost the second set 4-6. She was leading 3-2 in the third set when her opponent withdrew due to injury.
The match was originally scheduled for January 31 but was moved up one day due to impending weather. A match at Coastal Carolina, originally scheduled for February 1, will now be played on March 15.
The next match for the Terriers will be on Saturday, February 7, with a doubleheader against Emmanuel and Converse at the Reeves Tennis Center.
