SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team maintained its halftime lead to win over the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Wednesday night, 97-85, in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The Terriers (11-5, 3-0) were led by
Kahmare Holmes's 27 points, with four other Terriers in the double-figures.
Cayden Vasko grabbed nine rebounds, eleven points, eight assists, and three steals, narrowly missing out on a triple-double.
Brian Sumpter and
Rex Stirling had a block each.
"It's really hard to play with a lead," said head coach
Kevin Giltner. "We bended, but we never broke. I love this team's effort, and I love how they move the ball."
How It Happened
Kahmare Holmes opened the scoring for the Terriers after they missed three attempts from behind the arc. Scoring was slow in the opening frame of the game, with only 11 points scored in the first four minutes. Wofford's offense opened after the first media timeout, scoring on three straight possessions to go ahead by seven points at 14-7. The teams went on to trade stops and scores before heading into the next timeout.
Neither team could find a true string of points, continuing to trade scores. Holmes was the first player to reach ten points after going 3-3 from the line. He followed it up by finishing a layup on the next possession. A three-pointer from
Luke Flynn gave the Terriers their first double-digit lead of the game, 30-20. Wofford continued to prevent consecutive scores from UNCG, maintaining their ten-point lead heading into the final four minutes of the half.
Cayden Vasko was the main orchestrator of the Terrier offense, dishing out his fifth assist of the half after finding
Jayden Tyler, wide open, in the corner.
Chace Watley caught fire in the final stretch after almost turning the ball over. He responded with consecutive driving layups. This was the front end of a 13-2 run for the Terriers at the end of the half. The teams went to the locker rooms with Wofford leading, 56-36.
The second half saw a slow start for the Terriers as they did not find their first bucket for two minutes before Watley made a three-pointer. The Spartans had a 7-2 run in that time, grabbing a chunk out of the lead. Watley's make did not break the UNCG momentum as they started a 6-2 run to chip even further into the Terrier lead. Wofford went into the first media timeout with only one field goal made so far in the half but still had a 63-49 lead. It would take the Terriers until the 14-minute mark to find a field goal by way of
Luke Flynn, followed by a spin move layup from Watley. Every time that Wofford seemed to stunt the Spartan offensive, UNCG would find a run, this time 8-1. Max Ortega spun his defender and finished his layup, sparking a bounce back, 8-0 run as the advantage was 78-60.
Three-pointers became the name of the game as five straight field goals were from behind the arc. Wofford held a 15-point lead heading into the last four minutes. Layups on consecutive possessions from the Spartans put pressure on the Terriers. They were able to hold Wofford from making a field goal for three minutes. Crucial free throws from Machowski and Holmes kept the Terriers comfortable.
Cayden Vasko seemingly sealed the deal after stealing the ball and dunking the ball with a minute remaining. Wofford continued their win streak with a 97-85 final margin.
