SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team earned its eighth win and fourth shutout of the season Saturday night at Snyder Field, defeating Liberty 4-0. The Terriers started slowly, but goalkeeper
Pepe Hinterschuster made four saves, and the defense held firm until the offense roared to life, scoring three goals in 17 minutes in the second half.
First Half
Wofford started the game slowly and played the majority of the first half on their back foot, with Liberty dominating possession. Liberty outshot Wofford 9-1 in the half with two shots on goal, but Wofford was able to weather the storm and keep the game tied at zero. Finally, in the 37th minute,
Clemens Astrup sent a beautiful through ball through the Liberty defensive line, right to
Bear Rice, who played it back to him in the box, where he rocketed the ball home to put Wofford up 1-0 going into halftime.
Second Half
Coming out of halftime, the Terriers kept their feet on the gas and continued to pressure Liberty. They created several chances in Liberty's half, and eventually in the 74th minute, Wofford forced a Liberty handball in the box for a penalty kick, which
Fabian Menendez easily put away for his fourth goal of the season. The scoring didn't stop there for the Terriers, and in the 82nd minute
Samuel Byron scored his second goal of the year off of assists from
Franklin Spires and
Max Talley. Then in the 90th minute,
Franklin Spires scored a goal of his own after assists from
Scott Cheevers and
Sam Case, putting the Terriers up 4-0 right before the buzzer.
"We've done really well defensively," said Coach
Ryan Osborne after the game. "I've said that it's important for us to defend well, especially in moments when our backs were against the wall, and we needed to preserve that clean sheet. So to do that against Liberty tonight, a good team, is obviously pleasing again, and it's something we want to continue to focus on moving forward."
