Men’s Soccer Earns Second Shutout in Win Against VMI

LEXINGTON, VA – The Wofford men's soccer team earned their sixth win and second shutout of the season on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field with a 1-0 victory against VMI. The Terriers were locked even with the Keydets late in the game, but a timely goal from Adam Celik and a stalwart effort in his first start of the season from goalkeeper Evan Morris ultimately pushed Wofford across the finish line.
 
First Half
 
Wofford heavily controlled possession in the first half and outshot VMI five to one, with four shots on goal. The team was able to create several great chances but was unable to find the back of the net. The first real chance for the Terriers came in the 19th minute after Scott Cheevers' header in the box barely missed wide. Wofford continued to press VMI and came up with two more close chances by way of a long-distance shot from Max Talley that forced a save from the VMI goalkeeper, and another header from Bear Rice that also missed wide.
 
Second Half
 
Wofford continued to press VMI after the second half started, and Samuel Byron and Taylor Bowen both had good chances to score. Finally, in the 69th minute, after a VMI foul brought down Bear Rice on a Wofford counter, a free kick from Lennart Niederlander found its way to Scott Cheevers, who was able to divert the ball to an unmarked Adam Celik, who tapped it into the back of the net to put Wofford up 1-0, and give him his third goal of the season. continued to push their advantage, looking to double the lead, but was unable to find a goal. In the final minutes of the game, VMI was able to get two good shots on goal, but Evan Morris provided two saves to preserve the clean sheet and the win for Wofford.
