MACON, GA – The Wofford men's soccer team earned their seventh win and third shutout of the season Friday night at Betts Stadium, beating Mercer 2-0. The Terriers were unable to find the back of the net in the first half, but they were able to pull away in the second with an own goal from Mercer and a strike from
Declan Mettee. With the win, the Terriers improved their undefeated SoCon record to 2-0-1.
First Half
The Terriers came into the first half firing on all cylinders, and heavily controlled possession against the Bears. They outshot Mercer five to three in the first half, and Mercer's only shot on target was easily saved by goalkeeper
Pepe Hinterschuster. Wofford's first chance of the game came in just the ninth minute of play with a low shot from
Samuel Byron that was saved by Mercer's keeper. They had several other shots throughout the rest of the half, including another shot on target, but despite the constant pressure, they were unable to find a breakthrough in the first half.
Second Half
Wofford came out aggressive in the second half, and their pressure finally paid off in the 52nd minute, when
Bear Rice made a drive down the sideline and fired a cross into the box; deflecting off a Mercer defender and into the net for an own goal, which put Wofford up 1-0. The Terriers continued to control the ball and make plays in Mercer's half, and as the second half went on, the game began to get more and more physical. In the final 25 minutes of the game, Mercer's players were shown three red cards. After the first red card gave Wofford a numbers advantage, their attack began to get more and more potent, and the Terriers' attackers fired off five shots on goal in 15 minutes. In the 82nd minute, Wofford drew a corner kick, which was taken by
Clemens Astrup and headed into the back of the net by
Declan Mettee to put the Terriers up 2-0 and seal the game.
