Wofford Men’s Basketball Drops Rivalry Game

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team was unable to hold off long-time rivals Furman on Saturday evening, 76-67, in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Furman and Wofford have split the series for the season.

The Terriers (18-11, 10-6) were led by Kahmare Holmes with 20 points, while only two other Terriers scored in double-digits. Cayden Vasko had a double-double, leading the team with 10 rebounds, 13 points, three steals, and a block. Three Terriers had three assists each.

How It Happened
Kahmare Holmes opened the scoring in the game with a trip to the line after getting fouled on a fast break. The intensity was high from the start as the Terriers were able to force a jump ball in the opening minutes. Wofford held the Paladins from scoring for three minutes as they were able to hold a slight edge, 5-4, going into the first media timeout. Furman began to get hot, outscoring Wofford, 11-6, over the next four minutes. Wofford's first five shots from three missed, while the Paladins were two for four. Heading into the next media timeout, Furman led, 15-11.

The Paladins surged ahead, nearly reaching a double-digit lead before Cayden Vasko was able to hit the first three of the night for the Terriers. Nils Machowski followed up with three of his own on the next possession to close the lead to four. Despite their efforts, Furman stayed hot from three, grabbing a ten-point lead before the under-eight media timeout with their sixth from behind the arc on the night, 33-23.

Scoring shut down for three minutes for the Terriers before Vasko found the space for a driving layup. Rex Stirling became a dynamo in the paint, scoring eight in the first half. Wofford was able to hold the Paladins from scoring for the final three minutes of the half, pulling back a 9-0 run before halftime. The Paladins led by seven as the teams went into the tunnel, 43-36.

The run continued out of the break with five points from Kahmare Holmes in Wofford's first two possessions. The Terriers' offense kept pushing, scoring on four more trips down the court before the Paladins could force a stop. Brendan Rigsbee gave the Terriers their first lead of the half after going two for two from the line. The Paladins struck back with a 9-3 run before the 12-minute mark, but Vasko drained a three from the top of the arc to hold the lead going into the media timeout, 54-53.

The Terriers found themselves in a dry spell, scoring just four points over the next four minutes while Furman was able to grab the lead back. The Paladins pushed their lead to six heading into the final four minutes. They extended the lead to eight before the Terriers grabbed three points over two possessions. Wofford began to foul the Paladins in hopes of saving time, but Furman went seven-for-eight from the line to hold off the Terriers, 76-67.
