SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a cold and windy Sunday afternoon, the Wofford women's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Austin Peay at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Governors won the doubles point and the teams split the six singles matches.
In doubles,
Grace Agster and
Ella Suk had a quick 6-1 win at the #1 position. The Governors then had a pair of 6-4 wins at the #2 and #3 positions to claim the doubles point.
Singles began with
Chloe Elliott winning 6-0, 6-2 at the #5 position and
Grace Stout taking a 6-2, 6-1 win at the #6 position. After a win by Austin Peay at the #2 position, the overall match was tied at 2-2. Wofford took the lead with a 6-1, 7-4 win at the #4 position by
Ella Suk.
The match was tied at 3-3 following a win at the #1 position by Austin Peay. In the deciding match at the #3 position,
Quinn Bernthal lost the first set 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker. She responded with a 6-0 win in the second set. After leading 3-2 in the third set, the Governors won four straight games for a 6-3 win to secure the overall match win.
Wofford (3-2) had three straight matches postponed and had not played in ten days. Up next, they will visit Elon on Saturday, Feb. 28.
